NeoGAF & ResetERA - The Hilarious N̶e̶v̶e̶r̶e̶n̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ Splintering "Gaming" Forum Circus

Someone took the post really personally.

Curiously the ban message ends with "all you need to do is stop readi" out of nowhere, he was so fucking salty that he (probably) kept typing without realizing he ran out of space for words and sent the message like this anyway.

:story:

Why does anyone even want to be there, though? It's an utterly intolerable shithole.
Sometimes I wonder if there is some kind of thrill or perverse challenge in people's heads when it comes to these police-state forums. They ban everyone else for wrongthink, but I'm savvy enough to survive by following the rules.

I heard after GG died, she moved on to history videos that didn't do as well.
Tim Schafer gave her $30K because otherwise her not Kickstarter (it was some other site because, oh, turns out you can't kickstart something when you haven't delivered your original kickstarter) was doing so bad that it was obviously not meeting its funding by deadline.

Idiots just love their echo chambers, it's pretty pathetic. They like this idea that they control this space on the internet where only the people with the right opinions (them) are allowed to post.

Honestly I find NeoGAF to be an absolutely hivemind of degeneracy and idiots, but I admit that I still go back there because they're still one of the fastest ways to get news in the industry. They're pretty knowledgeable and there are a lot of posters who curate information that gives you a bit of insight with leaks, development processes, insider details, datamined patch notes, etc. In general, a lot of the high quality posters have abandoned the site and moved on to posting primarily on Twitter, but there's still some value in a few of the non-discussion related threads on there.

I think I've found the perfect thread to turn normie gamers against Neogaf. Nintendo launched their new console last month and 800,000 buyers signed up for an email newsletter. One of the newsletters included a survey about the person purchasing the device. 28,000 responses were tallied and Neogaf is reeling over the results.

The forum has a strong narrative going that women are vastly undermarketed to in the console gaming world. They believe the average girl would rush out and buy even more obscure titles like Dead or Alive or Nier in similar amounts to men if developers made it a point to target women. That means no skimpy outfits on the ladies and lots of men for them to drool over. The moderators seem to have made it their personal mission to craft this narrative and ban anyone even remotely questioning their believed truth. Nintendo's survey came back 90% men. That is including trannies as women. The logical conclusion is that women don't rush out to buy new gaming machines and instead wait until there is more software they like (Just Dance and Animal Crossing for the normie girls who just play games when they're bored) or a lower price. Even this seems to hurt Neogaf members.

That gender distribution :/ rip
Whoa at that gender distribution, I remember reading back in the day about how the DS was getting both sexes into the gaming action.

I wonder why it skewered towards males so heavily.
Gender distribution seems wierd since anecdotally Nintendo is by far the most popular platform with the women i know.

I suspect its just a quirk of a supply constrained launch.

Edit: i suspect the reason would be that many couples and familys are playing the switch together, but a male of the household more frequently took the survey.
The fine print says it's from an email survey sent to consumers who linked a Nintendo Account to their Switch.

Is it possible that women are less likely to mess with accounts and linking and such, and that could be a partial reason for the disparity? Or perhaps are less likely to fill out email surveys about video games, for whatever reason?
Zelda has a pretty huge female following tho
"The core is mainly made up of males, news at eleven"

Do you have evidence of this?
Echoing others to say that gender distribution is utterly tragic.
Worth noting that the gender distribution is based on the purchaser of the console. So at least some of that 90% is likely to be husbands or boyfriends who were the ones to buy the console, even while usage wise they count as being two people or more (if they have kids and such). Otherwise it just doesn't count what people might consider as joint purposes (ie, hubby bought it but it's for both of them).

I mean, still a long ways to go and it would be good to see the needle shift further as the system's install base grows, but worth keeping that sort of thing in mind.

This exact post isn't that radical (why would it be "good to see the needle shift further") but people were banned for suggesting mothers and wives buy games for their kids in that other thread.

Whats up with that Gender Ratio? I distinctly recall the Wii and especially the DS being very popular with women.

Is it cause most early buyers are hardcore fans?
The gender thing is pretty strange there is a huge amount of female Zelda fans.
That gender is not badly made ... the actual question was THE GENDER OF WHO WANTED THE SWITCH MORE IN YOUR HOUSE, not "what are the genders of the people playing"

Considering that the second question was how many people play and the MAJORITY was more than one than the gender difference is AT LEAST wrong

This is an unhinged tranny. He daydreams that Princess Peach from Mario is a tranny.

The hardcore, dedicated wait outside a brick and mortar store peeing inside plastic bottles levels of dedication is exclusive to the Y chromosome.

Take that women! You'll never be as GAMER as us and I have the bar graphs to prove it.

Wait for Animal Crossing + Pokemon + Nintendo Dogs HD
I'm a little surprised at the split, given how enthusiastically Kass and Sidon were received.

selection bias in my social media
Women don't give two shits about the Switch?
Disappointed abut the gender ratio, but one month of sales isn't going to tell us anything about the long term. Nintendo has done more than other manufacturers in the last few years (particularly with DS and 3DS marketing) to market to female gamers, so I have confidence the ratio will hopefully even out.
Seems to me, that the survey says more about males being more responsive to internet surveys than women...

In my social circle the figure is more like 60/40. Most gamer women there already got one, the rest are waiting for more games.
Considering how the question is formulated the 90/10 gender ratio isn't that surprising. As I believe women are more outward looking and men more inward. So women will be more likely to fill in their significant other and men more likely themselves. This is of course generalization but I do think there is some truth to it.
3.5% reporting? That's not great numbers.

Could really skew some of this. Though I personally fit into both majority age groups...so what do I know?
28,000 responses is a lot higher than most of the surveys that get posted on Neogaf by moderators.
Switch design and color contribute to gender distribution I think.
That male to female ratio.

Didn't expect it.
That gender disparity is tragic :( Hope it evens out with time.
Also, I am not sure every woman might feel as safe camping outside a game store in a sleeping bag on a public sidewalk as a man. Might the fear of assault or at least harassment keep a female gamer wanting a launch Switch at home? Thus leaving those potential spots to be filled by more men and feeding the demographic cycle and the preconception of who is hardcore in the first place.

It's kind of like the gaming side's miniature equivalent to November 9. Worldviews shattered. Some of them sound like they just found out their childhood dog is going to be put down. Others are in complete denial. Can you imagine a similar reaction on any other gaming website? I don't think The Mary Sue would be this shell-shocked. They'd just use it as an opportunity to claim Link should be a woman.

There's also some fun comments about how some of the other data proves Nintendo isn't for children. It's for manchildren.

Normally I'd say gender dysphoria is so rare as to be statistically insignificant, but given how ludicrously overrepresented troons are on gaming websites I think it probably isn't.

Maybe a better explanation is trans people (not transtrenders, real trans people) are less likely to be social butterflies because of the inherent stigma of being trans. Gaming is usually a solo activity. It attracts introverts and other people who aren't extroverted for whatever reason. And "social" interactions on the internet (forums, social media) attract the same crowds, too.

So it makes sense to me that trans people would be over-represented online. They control their persona and image online in ways they can't in real life, and they can really find and communicate with other trans people, who are scattered around the world.

And when they find a hugbox like NeoGAF where the loudest voices (pretend to?) fetishize and celebrate trannies, the most unstable of them probably flock to it

The prevalence of gender dysphoria is about 0.01%. Even if they were 10 times overrepresented they'd still be a tiny fraction. I remember one survey saying trans women made up over 1% of the responders, then implied that was too low.

Right, but I'm saying this is a self-selecting group, not randomly determined. If you got every tranny just in the U.S. together in one room, it would seem like there are tons of them, but that's only because we wouldn't be seeing (and have a hard time visualizing) the millions of cis normal Americans.

We also have to consider the transtrenders. You don't have to transition to claim being trans. It costs you nothing, especially when you're anonymous online under a pseudonym, and the asspat benefits are huge. Some of these self-identified trans/genderspecials online are probably just looking for attention and aren't really trans. I wouldn't be shocked if a large number of millennial narcissists claimed "trans" status for tummy rubs.
