There's value in having 'journalism' that you can use to bolster the message you want to send, so companies have an incentive to keep lap-dog writers around so they can say their game has strong reviews. To people who are aware of the state of games journalism, their word means nothing. But if you don't know, then a theoretically authoritative source can seem like a good place to get information.

In the former Soviet Union they opened thousands of "Soviet Culture" museums that never made a profit and lost millions of dollars a year? There's an unproven business meme that SocJus types use to convince corporations to support them. The meme is that by focusing on diversity instead of the core product they can bring in more women and PoCs (Asians count as white), which would outweigh alienating say 10-20% of your existing userbase. I know of no examples where this strategy was implemented successfully, it's almost always resulted in failure. The meme is relatively new, so executives are likely not certain how effective it is.

I wouldn't say it's a new meme. I've been hearing that since Anita Sarkeesian. I remember Assassins Creed Liberation (the Vita one) being an example of getting exactly what they claimed to want, but passing the blame when it sold like dog turds.

I didn't want to narc on the ResetEra.live operator but now that he's shutting down the site, I want to point out that he's done far more to infringe on ResetEra LLC's trademark than anything I've ever done. He owns a "resetera" domain on a TLD (as opposed to my subdomains), he uses their actual logo on his site and he's in violation of the ResetEra ToS. Despite all of this I'm unaware of ResetEra LLC enforcing their trademark.
