NeoGAF & ResetERA - The Hilarious N̶e̶v̶e̶r̶e̶n̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ Splintering "Gaming" Forum Circus

Am I doing something wrong if "black people!" is not my first thought hearing "Ape Out" as a title?

I hate when they do that. The 'I made this inference so it must exist. If you didn't it's because you're not aware enough, rather than because I'm hyper-sensitive'.

Chimp out isn't racist. But if your first thought on hearing about a chimp is to associate it with black people, then you are. And no claiming 'I don't think that, they think that!' would convince me otherwise. It's like so many things in SJW-world - just because you say something is bad doesn't make it true.

Regardless of Bailey and Olsen's attempted CP setup of 8chan, that Mark defends the board by saying "Child Porn has never been tolerated. Drawings arent fucking people" shows that drawn child porn is in fact tolerated. It might not meet the current legal definition of CP but it's still distasteful enough to me that it's why I see Alison Rapp as a degenerate whore. Merely avoiding associating your company with criminal conduct is a pretty low bar for someone in PR/Marketing. They should know better than to get their company's name entangled with controversial and deviant sexual shit, which is why Nintendo was right to fire Rapp and quite frankly, THQ Nordic should probably fire Philipp Brock.

Not because of a resetera brigade braying for his blood, but because either he is colossally incompetent as a marketing director to not know that an 8ch AMA would be a shitshow (impossible to believe) or he willfully made a terrible judgment call. I'd say the latter considering he had to notice when he went there and he answered questions about lolis while representing THQ Nordic. To defend them by saying that lolis may look like children but really they identify as 200-year-old witches so it's all kosher is about as believable as a troon saying they're actually a woman so act accordingly. It's drawn child porn, and Brock associated THQ's name with it, and that's staggering incompetence or poor judgment and both are grounds enough for firing him.

That said, it's still amusing to see Resetera get worked up into a froth over this. They really are incapable of expressing any sort of opinion on anything without rage and hyperbole and invoking the nazis. They're delusional if they think that this becoming an issue for THQ had anything to do with their fainting spells and screeching into the void.

To be somewhat fair to THQ, Reddit (which would have been far better for an AMA) has the upvote/downvote nonsense that would make things a shitshow too, and the fact a chan board is anonymous (unless you tripcode) and lacks that was likely (and naively) seen as a better alternative).

Still, I'd have chosen Reddit to do this anyway if only because optics are, as you said, important here.

Why not 4ch then? It has a larger audience doesn't it? I just really don't buy it that a marketing director would care about issues with upvotes/downvotes as long as they address what the majority of fans what to hear.

The amount of effort that is put into running and regulating an AMA on reddit is enormous and they have a great deal of experience. It's pretty obvious from one look at 8ch that it wouldn't be replicated there. If you are in PR and Marketing, your #1 value isn't free speech to any troll who wants to post whatever they want about your games – it's controlling the message.

Or it should have been. Now the Washington Post is running a headline that THQ is having to disavow child porn. That's not controlling the message. Resetera are self-aggrandizing idiots to think the fallout has anything to do with them, but anyone who saw THQ's tweet first announcing the AMA knew it was time to pull out the popcorn.

By this reasoning no company should have a Twitter presence, a tumblr (well okay actually nobody should have that), Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, or literally anything else on the Internet. It's just not possible to maintain that level of purity, it's just that only certain outlets are singled out for it.

Nobody says this shit about tumblr which has literally been thrown off the App Store for outright, literal child porn that they do nothing about and when they are forced to do something, instead of contacting law enforcement they just destroy the evidence.

And it also has loli shit.

Chimp out isn't racist. But if your first thought on hearing about a chimp is to associate it with black people, then you are.

I first saw it on niggermania, and there's also a similar racist site called chimpout.

I've rarely used it to refer to anyone but white people, though.

Quite true. I'd still have chosen somewhere other than 8ch (which isn't even indexed by Google, so no SEO benefit there anyway), simply to avoid the hassle.

Reddit, despite it's checkered history, is a relatively "mainstream" place to do AMAs and it won't be thought of as unusual even by the SJW crowd. Chan boards, unfairly or not, are generally stigmatized as hellholes and THQ walked into a PR landmine even if things stayed aboveboard.

Or maybe they didn't. Maybe it was a trial balloon of some sort. Waltz on into the shittiest of the well known chans and then "apologize" when the inevitable RRREEEEEsetera-ing happened and see what happens. So far, nothing has except REEE.

Companies with a fair number of channers probably already use 4chan and the like just to covertly tease things and see what the general response is to it from an unfiltered audience. You don't get that even in an AMA on reddit where it's still filtered through some autistic subredditor spastic.

I'm not sure exactly why they would do it there because 8/v/ is fucking retarded, but so is 4/v/.

But drawings of anime children exist on reddit too. Doesn't hentai use highschool as a common background, most people in highschool are underage, is that CP?

Only if you do the ama on an "woke" sub, or an official sub. Can you imagine if they did the AMA on KotakuInAction? ResetEra and the games press have gone on crusades for less.

Choosing 8chan, no matter how bad it might look to you, shows that the company is clued in enough to know that the usual woke outlets don't represent their customer base any more. They weren't clued in enough to ignore SJW screeching, but slow progress is still progress.

Despite this probably being a simple newb mistake (never made a poll before, perhaps), I like to imagine this as a humble plea to ignore reality. Can't have bad results if everyone pretends there are no results!

Because Twitter, tumblr, Reddit, etc. have a fundamentally different structure than an imageboard. Twitter/insta/yt/fb/other social media have a structure where every account itself is seen as an independent page, and they're only held accountable for what they promote on their page – they'd only get in trouble by liking/reposting content so it appears alongside theirs. Each subreddit is independent too, and they'd only be held accountable for the content that appears alongside their AMA in the subreddit of their choosing. Posting their AMA alongside the typical fare in r/incest or r/DeadEyes would get them in similar hotwater, because their AMA thread would be appearing alongside threads featuring deviant sexual shit. So the difference is, you wouldn't have to wade through that stuff to get to official company posts on another site.

Not to mention, because they held it at 8ch that has a spam problem and lax moderation, they had a lot of deviant stuff appearing IN their AMA, not just alongside it. Plus they responded positively to some controversial things, like references to lolis for one (showing men grabbing sexualised little girls, according to a podcast I heard). That wouldn't happen if it was Reddit or if it was social media where their own team controlled and regulated the posts. Hell, even 4ch would've been a better/less controversial choice than 8ch – wasn't 8ch founded because a lot of their stuff wasn't tolerated anymore on 4ch so they branched off?

Or maybe they didn't. Maybe it was a trial balloon of some sort. Waltz on into the shittiest of the well known chans and then "apologize" when the inevitable RRREEEEEsetera-ing happened and see what happens. So far, nothing has except REEE.

That's a pretty irresponsible thing to do when your stock is publicly traded and could get you in trouble with shareholders. I mean, maybe their marketing dude was thinking along those lines, but like hell the rest of the company is. Their parent company's stock has dropped 2.5% since the AMA was announced though I can't say it's because of it. But bad business decisions can be brought up as questions, and parent companies can bring down heat on their subsidiaries. The parent company is going to be changing its name to distance itself from THQ Nordic and prevent "confusion", so that should help. It's not a massive problem for the company but it was an avoidable one.

Resetera is definitely not their customer base considering half the users are boycotting everything. But 8ch is pretty niche. There's no market it gamer culture wars since most people don't know or care if you stick it to the sjws or show up them nazi gamergaters. Many people browse Reddit from work. That's their mainstream base right there and they turned up their nose at it to court controversy for no apparent gain. That's pretty stupid.

Look, I know it's pretty unpopular to say. No-one likes to even obliquely agree with resetera. But hey, even though Stalin murdered millions of people, drove his daughter to suicide, and left his son to die in a Nazi concentration camp, you've gotta hand it to him: he sure was right about the church being a con and he did have a very manly moustache.

ERA is melting down after their tantrum over the THQ AMA has failed to produce any kind of result they want so now they're coming up with hysterical trolling plans to try and get back at them.

"Just stop doing your job lol".

I'm sure covering fewer products is only going to make their site more appealing to readers, not less. And I'm sure other game production companies are gonna respond super positively to journos deciding they have the right to ban them.

682654

Or maybe you could just flat-out slander them with cheese pizza allegations. That definitely won't lead to them pulling a Hogan times 10 and putting your entire site/magazine and all of its writers out of business permanently.

682662

Only a troll would say something like "maybe saying shit that could get you sued for slander isn't the best way to own THQ" so the mods quickly vanned him.

682666

And then they called him a piece of shit.

682672

If anyone's brand is gonna be tainted by a bunch of insane spergs randomly appearing out of nowhere and screaming "cheese pizza" it's probably not gonna be THQ's.

I like how this forum of impotent screeching nobodies even thinks they have a nuclear option. What nuclear option? Holding their breath until they turn blue? Throwing their rattle out of the crib and REEEEEing some more?

Journalists were crying over tumblr being neutered, if I remember correctly. I was following Sarah Jeong at the time to see if she would be less exceptional after being hired by the NYT and she and every one of her butt buddies were saying "oh come oooooooon, it's not fair to judge an entire community by a few bad eggs". Hmmmm, you don't say? I browse /v/ fairly regularly and I want nothing to do with /pol/. These people would be really surprised by how fairly popular /leftypol/ is on 8chan.

I really don't think you understand the nature of anonymous image boards or 8chan. If anything, 8chan is MORE like reddit than 4chan, as 8chan boards can be started at will rather than by the admins like on 4chan, and the creators are mostly responsible for moderating it. 8chan's racist shit is no worse or better than 4chan's racist shit. Also, 8chan really got popular not because they were more extreme than 4chan but because the mods on 4chan got sick of gamergate shit and banned it.

They're even more banhappy than 8/pol/ and both moderated by complete asshats.

This is why you don't apologize. They never accept it, even if you prostrate youself as they want you to.

Looks like Hecht didn't like the fact that people were posting the POLL results on other sites so he "rebooted" the thread.
And the poll start to tilt heavily to people that will keep buying THQ games probably didn't help either.
