Here is the thing Resetera, the majority of gamers do not care if the main character is a female or black or whatever. Tomb Raider, one of the most popular games around. GTA San Andreas, a beloved GTA game.

What has changed since the release of them though is the aggressive, bitchy and insufferable leftists who make the hobby a drag. You never find anything fun. Everything is problematic -> See that seriously exceptional "Why women criticize" topic on Era and all the bans that happen due to the hivemind. Then when a game has a female lead it's non-stop screaming about how it has to be everyone's Game of the Year and if you don't buy it you are probably ISIS, like Pewdiepie.

Gamers don't hate good games, no matter who the lead or cast is. People hate you lunatics who in turn are that insufferable you occasioanlly cause those who may have bought the game to steer clear of it. Sometimes marketing makes idiots of themselves like with Battlefield. Virtue signalling and thinking that will get more sales. No. Opportunistic vultures get called out for the lolcows they are, as well as companies attempting to shit all over gamers with fake woke messaging.

Lastly, just because you are fat and disabled, doesn't mean it makes sense for the latest superhero game to have a fat, overweight cripple. Get some perspective at times. Games are fantasy. Characters are often going to be athletic and good looking to fill fantasy roles.

I've never played a game and said "I can't connect with this character because they aren't like me." When you are playing a character you become that character. This is why I believe these people never play or watch entertainment - they don't understand that it's escapism and not meant to represent every aspect of yourself.
