Alexa is an awful method for looking at the amount of traffic a website gets, because it only uses the amount of people browsing a website with the alexa toolbar installed to gauge that site's traffic. All it shows is a site's relative popularity among a subset of people who have that specific toolbar installed, so ERA claiming that Kiwifarms is dead based on its metrics is pretty naive at best.

I honestly don't know if Similarweb is any better at tracking the amount of traffic involved, but at the very least, they do claim to use multiple sources of data rather than a single toolbar whose only purpose is to provide more traffic data to Alexa if you install it.

Alexa was bought by Amazon, its metrics are no longer limited to the toolbar though the various Alexa plugins including the toolbar are still used significantly in the sampling.

I believe that that Alexa/Amazon has mentioned at times that while the specific pagerank and other things are not great metrics, general trends match up fairly well when matched to other data they have access to (like Amazon's hosting services) and that they've over time adjusted the model for this. I think they've also mentioned that it's quite terrible for certain countries.

I'd still generally discount its value but I think there probably is some validity to the trends thing just from experience of comparing it on websites that did collapse in users. And in the case where a website (ResetERA) claims to be the largest video game forum on the internet based on traffic I think looking at Alexa's collapsing graph for it and comparing it to other websites should at least raise questions about that claim. In the case of The Kiwi Farms Null could be like "look here's the actual number" and we'd know Alexa's accuracy, but Cerium is never going to do that because we can pretty much guess at how it would work out.
