I know you know, but for anyone else wondering it's because Waypoint's review considers a game where you land on uninhabited islands to be a form of colonialism. Some of ERA obviously have to defend this as "higher than surface level analysis" rather than calling it stupid.

North Americans couldn't even smelt copper before the Europeans landed, something that had been done since 5000 bce.
