At the very least it takes a clear vision. Kiwi Farms has pretty good moderation because even though it's general and the rules are broad, the board culture is strong and the mods share an idea of what the forum should be like. Similarly most niche forums like, say, a private MMO server forum, will tend to be pretty fine because everyone is there to enjoy a very narrow topic.
If ERA was actually about videogames, and had no tangency style politics section, it wouldn't be like this.

The CAH stuff is hilarious given Max's history. The most infamous event was when he got what was almost certainly falsely accused of being a rapist by some psycho bitch and he just apologized for it (though I guess it worked seeing as people eventually just forgot and moved on) rather than laying into the cunt. Everything since has been him trying to be as woke as possible on his public persona from banning cards in his game that are somehow more offensive than all the others to your typical Orange Man Bad Twitter posting. One more middle-age neckbeard "ally" outed as a piece of shit (at least he's not a sex pervert though with the rape accusation that would have been pretty ironic) to throw on the pile.

I'd imagine, that like with any other website, most of the content is discussion they find interesting, with people they like. The batshit-insane elements run the website, and make up most of the amusing content on this one.
It is striking how little most of the dwindling membership cares about the howling lunatics in charge.
