I'm old enough that I was appalled when I found out the guy who wrote Rambo was going to direct the sequel to Alien. And it would have marines and machine guns.

I still think the first is better but Aliens is an absolutely delightful roller coaster of a movie, and I'm pretty sure more people liked it.

Unlike our good friends at ResetEra it's entirely possible to enjoy movies for what they are and still acknowledge them as being poor for a series or existing world.

It was fun and I liked the obvious twist with David/Fassbender's character. It would probably do better as it's own universe rather than trying to be a prequel to Alien, but at face value and without thinking too hard it was enjoyable. It's just a feeling that it tried to be a part of the world and add to it rather than subvert or destroy it like Nu-Wars did. Rather different in it's creativity than simply taking over and assuming control of an established franchise.

I can understand that take. That was always my biggest issue with Prometheus, forcing it as an Alien franchise movie when, if they had just did an original IP and changed the Engineers to something else, you probably would have had something completely on tier and in line with the original 1979 movie, just for a modern audience.

Covenant I only watched the one time but I just distinctly remember disliking it. That and Shaw's offscreen death.

I said this in the Comicsgate thread and I’ll say it here... a lot of these are concepts that actually could be interesting if done well. the problem, just like with Comicsgate, is that “done well” can’t just start from wanting to make propaganda and use strawmen. you also can’t do it by rewriting a character people already identify with on an almost primal level.

but you could absolutely make an interesting superhero out of a black character whose parents were, in fact, murdered by white cops in an arrest gone wrong. Just don’t make them white supremecists. take that out and the whole thing just becomes a grey area and a tragedy - and the grey area is where stories happen.
you could also make an excellent supervillain out of the exact same character.

hell, imagine a Batman arc about character who does this, using Batman as his role model. He fights crimes, because crime did lead to his parents death, but he then also goes on to terrorize the Gotham police force because their incompetence also led to his parents’ deaths. It leads to Batman confronting him, and after a cat and mouse chase through the city, each using similar tactics, Batman tricks him into making a similar mistake and proving that everyone is fallible and his crusade is hypocritical. It would even allow Batman to take a new protege if they wanted to. I haven’t followed Batman for years, so I have no idea if he’s still using Robins or not, but there you go.

I'm no comics guy but I remember in the Arkham games you'd find little hints of characters that weren't in the games but would unlock character entries. One of the entries was for a character who's name I don't remember who was basically this. He had petty criminal parents that got killed by cops and became an inverse batman cop killer.

Batman needs the police to do his thing. Without cops he kind of can't detain anyone without resorting to making some sort of black site torture prison denying the criminals a right to trial or just executing them on the spot.

They're a lot like the Terminator movies where I feel the first one is more of an actual horror movie (fuck is a normal human supposed to do against this fucking thing?) while the second is more action-oriented with horror elements (now they have their own Terminator helping them!). I've seen Alien far more times but I like Aliens a little bit more (and it's definitely more quotable) though you really can't go wrong with either.
