Pedophiles do not deserve any sympathy. Nor do people that would willingly commit bestiality.

Sex is an intimate thing. It requires consent. Kids and animals cannot consent. Therefore, this will always be wrong. Always.

The fact that NeoGAF can't wrap their minds around this simple fact is insane. This is like trying to defend a serial killer because his fetish is killing people. Do you think the fucker needs to kill people to express his sexual desires?

NeoGAF is a forum full of real people, not an imaginary world where dispassionate academic debate can take place and anything can be said without affecting others. We shouldn't be having threads like this inappropriate and pointless debate about pedophilia in the first place, and we will not from here on out, but while we can't control how someone reacts to the content of the site and whether they decide to leave, and we shouldn't coddle anyone for the sake of it, this thread has gone far, far beyond anything that can be described that way. We can at least be a little respectful to our fellow members when it comes to serious matters like personal experience with being the victim of child molestation/rape. Clearly a basic level of human decency hasn't been maintained and that will be addressed immediately.

Apologies to Fiction for everything that was said in this thread and how things played out overall.

Many academic discussions can anything but disspasionate, the thing is that every opinion should be backed by experience (and that is not limited to empirical data even if is the preferred one). Ideally, anyone that can back their arguments can participate; this is something your forum doesn't actually encourage as anyone can be banned if a mod (or Evilore himself) feels like it without justifying to the other members of the community

The problem is not that Opiate wanted that Fiction to calm down but that he outright did tell her that she should not discuss her experience as "is close to her" and saying that "I don't want to ban you". There is a real difference between moderating a disscusion to impose over others, it has nothing to do with being detached or close to a topic but how your mods can bypass others and get applauded for it. Banning a "problematic" topic and getting rid of a mod that catches the attention of outsiders are not going to eliminate that big problem, as many shitty mods are still in your staff willing to impose themselves over other people and topic ban seems more like you waiting to keep your ad money than deal with a topic in an actual honest and open way. But your forum is not honest nor open:

Why community threads are closed when someone shit talks the staff?

Why Besada can ban anyone he pleases and outright tell a poster that he has favorites and people that he search reason for banning?

Why Aeana is allowed to be a mod when she antagonized Xseed staff and often openly looks down to a segment of JRPG aficionados in the forum?

Why is your admin allowed to have a big "please donate to my Kickstarter" thread when self promoting is ban worthy?

Why did you made public the emails (with IRL names as to sign to your forum requires a paid Email service) that asked you about allowing discussion about Zoe Quinn after her shitstorm started?

Why do you ban anyone that brings your logs about your infamous Eurotrip while acting like "nice guy" with female users?

Why topics like Anita are heavely moderated in favor of "she is always right, shit up or I will dogpile you" as you openly expressed annoyance of her?

Why people like Lime that calls a academic "house nigger" are only banned for a week and people that express concern about Wu claims of harassment banned for two months?
