Nepotism in universities?

I'm gonna power level a bit, I'm one of those people who finished high school and got a job carrying shit inside a van and driving it to places, so I have no idea if this is normal.

Is it regular procedure in britbong unis to make a freshman who has been there for barely 3 months student representative, director of activities, give him extra money for team projects and make him do speeches in front of hundreds of people normal or there's some nepotism going on? (should mention his dad his a professor at another uni)


UPDATE: After some digging I found out the university he's in is known for its lower entry level requirements and easier courses.
I guess that explains a lot

I don't know that much about the UK, but common sense suggests that it's very likely due to nepostism or some other unfair positive treatment (like his family not outright pulling the strings, but slightly "influencing" other people).

Unless he has a very impressive track record of accomplishments, like out of the ordinary.

That's my take anyways, it should not be normal for what is essentially (and supposedly) a "random" student, unless some exceptional factor is taken into account.

Something he can be proud of, I'm not going to be mean here, but it does not warrant that preference over others.

He's rubbing it on your face? Well, you know that what got him in that position was not skill nor talent, what you can do is to not let it get to you (why would it? It's childish nonsense) and become better yourself at what you do.

Oh I'm not an artist, hell I can't draw to save my life, like I said, bud came bragging to me about his newfound perks and I thought it was weird, seemed he was having it way too easy so I wanted to ask a bunch of brutally honest people what they thought.
