Interesting. I read this as saying that people are far more attracted to physical appearances, to the exclusion of anything else, than they would like to admit. Admiring facial symmetry is deeply encoded into our genetics, and studies have found that criminals are more likely to be deviants in their structural features, hence less attractive and more likely to be weeded out of the genepool. Would this then be a case then where the proxy of good genes = good mate break down? Or is it merely indicative that what humans evolved to select for is not the same as what societal coding tells us to choose, and thus there is a conflict between the two?
