Netflix's DEGRASSI - Like the old degrassi, but with Tumblr and no melodrama

Was strolling through Netflix, and I saw Degrassi was streaming on it. I thought "Great! I remember watching this show 10-15 years ago and enjoying it." Drake and school shootings, some decent teen-drama, nostalgia, etc etc.

Wasn't the same Degrassi

Watched 4 episodes so far, and so far there isn't an episode where they fail to mention safe spaces, trigger warnings, or 3rd wave feminism bullshit.

This New incarnation is very different than the one I watched back in Jr high and high school.

I'm Next Gen, they touched on issues like discrimination, poverty, sexual/domestic abuse, pedophilia, rape in serious matter (even when it became so overdramtic that you had to laugh at it, it still made its point).

This New shit they put out is all about a bunch of rich kids pissing their pants about texts messages and hurt feelings and shit.

Has anyone else watched this shit?

(don't how to edit) what posses me off is it's half hazardous way it tackles the refugee situation is by just adding Muslim characters in the background and saying "hey, we're diverse, wow!"

I only saw a bit of Degrassi and it was charming in its simple approach at teenage school life...

Oh god. They're ruining everything!!

I'm only familiar with Next Generation (having seen some of it in Jr. High). I should be glad that that's as much as I know about that series.

I vaguely knew of the TOS and TNG. Is this like AbramsGrassi with shit lens flares?

I've only ever seen one episode of Degrassi on TV, and it just happened to be the one where Aubrey Graham becomes a cripple. Other than that, my knowledge of the show is non-existent. I'd prefer to keep it that way.

The upcoming MST3K reboot sounds not cancer

Is that the one Joel was Kickstarting, or something else entirely?

Honestly it kind of rubbed me the wrong way how everyone who was popular at some point 10-15-20 years ago is suddenly trying to ride the coattails of their one-time success. Musicians who nobody has cared about in 15 years are getting on Kickstarter trying to get funds to record a new album, Joel from MST3K is trying to revive the brand even though it's over and Mike and the rest of the dudes have been doing essentially the same thing without trying to revive a dead "cash cow"...

Why can't people leave well enough alone? Does Joel really need the money that bad? Does fucking TLC or whatever the band was that Kickstarted an album recently really need fan-money to make it, if it's so goddamn good that it's worth coming out of retirement for?

Sorry for the :autism:

Having grown up in the 80's, the only DeGrassi I knew was the one about grade school kids just getting by in a once lower-middle class Toronto suburb, but I guess those days of the corner grocery store are long gone (someone showed me pics of what the area looks like today and it doesn't surprise me, Toronto has become that stinkin' rich). This new show sounds like that's all it is. It's just like the snotty kids today wasting their parents internet bill on Netflix daily.

In Joel's case he had Cinematic Titanic going as his riffing thing for a while, and from what I heard Jim Mallon had some real shit go down in his life and basically decided out of the blue to no longer be an asshole about selling his share to Joel.
So in this case at least it's not quite as bad.

I've only watched a few episodes of Degrassi: The Next Generation. The one I remember the most is the one where a girl gets a vibrator from her friend. While sitting in the front of the class, it falls out of her bag and the teacher picks it up and shows it to to the class. It was ridiculously adsurb and I don't think I ever laughed as hard at something that wasn't supposed to be funny on TV.

To me, Degrassi always seemed like a melodramatic after school special but I guess the original series had some merit. The Netflix version seems like a diet cola version with some SJWism mixed in.

I'm sure we've all been there!

The original series certainly didn't pussyfoot around very serious issues in the original "Degrassi Junior High" and "Degrassi High" shows.
