I don't really see this as "fusing" them. Romulus blowing up and Spock disappearing always took place in the main universe. I'm sure there will be serious problems with the Picard show, but I don't think taking a Praxis-redux that already occurred and building on it a bit is really one of them.
edit: The article headline is just nerd-rage clickbait. Nothing has been said anywhere about integrating the Abrams movies beyond the stuff established to have happened in the main universe which no one should be surprised about.
Go watch The Expanse.
As I understand it, the Picard show has to be a set in the Kelvin/whateverthefuckwe'recallingittoday universes due to licencing issues. The assumption I've heard is a 25% variation from TOS/TNG/DS9/Voy/Ent, due to CBS insisting on working through... something.
And frankly, no. Romulus blowing up and all the Spock shit can easily be retconned. Did you see the old universe, at all, represented in any of the Star Trek movies or STD? Neither did I. For all I know this was one of the billions of timelines we saw existed when all those different Enterprise Ds appeared, including the one that refused to go back because the Borg were winning. I forget the episode really but if you're familiar you know it. Kelvin is dead, fiscally most importantly, and all future films in it are shelved and unlikely to ever get taken down. I watch Midnight's Edge so that's where I get my info.
I think we're in for Xavier meets Picard. I only hope being pushed around in a wheel chair all the time on set doesn't actually weaken Patrick Stewart. I don't appreciate his take on Picard but his work throughout TNG and it's movies shows what a solid actor he is - without even considering Conspiracy Theory and X-Men. An acting talent like that deserves a measure of consideration for his age and respect. After all this isn't a movie, it's a show and it will film for like four to six months at a time. And Mr. Stewart - is it Sir. yet? - isn't a spring chicken. I sincerely hope he doesn't hurt him self trying for this perverted image of Picard. Either way this is a vanity project and has nothing to do with what the fans want to see, they've made that apparent since about the second announcement about the show. I'm guessing it's DOA.
It also doesn't help that apparently they're ripping off Seth's idea for the Orville concept for their shorts. It was a good idea until Seth did it better and more relatably, now its going to come off as tired. This franchise is presently fucked. The sooner the failure stops the sooner it can be effectively rebooted for a new generation.
