If one enjoys reading, an e-book can be a good investment. There's lots of books on the internet to be had if you don't mind reading off a screen, e-ink or other. Project Gutenberg has a wealth of legally free and public domain books which include many contemporary classics like Dante, Shakespeare, Milton, etc.

-Try to join the military, most likely the Navy.

That's an awesome aspiration. Even if your plans change, thank you for even considering it.
I had thoughts of joining the navy for a few reasons. One reason was because my fathers were in the navy, another reason is because I feel I might not be able to finish college if unless I made enough money so joining the military can help not in just getting money but also in gaining experience for a civilian career. I also had thoughts to join the military since I feel that would be a good way to serve my country. Even if there are alternatives, I still want to serve in the military. Finally, I originally thought of the navy but my dad said that the air force could be a good alternative. Still if I want to join, I have to make sure that this is the path I want to take, I also have to pass the ASVAB along with boot camp, and I must put in all of my effort in being a good member of the branch I join.

Best of luck man! I think it's a most excellent thing you want to do. As many of you know my Dad was in the Navy so I have a soft spot for Squids and Swabbies. If my knee hadn't kept me from service I would have gone either Navy or Army. Totally proud of you for this decision man.

I've read the Divine Comedy and Paradise Lost in high school. They're great books. I hope you have the Portable Dante for his works or another annotated version or you're going to have a hard time understanding them.

I've gotten through The Inferno, but only the first part of the Purgatorio. I really didn't get a whole lot out of reading it on my own until I picked up Spark Notes on it. Turns out that Dante Aligheri was mostly writing nasty little barbs towards Venetian families and politicians that had pissed him off. Sounds like a certain someone we all know.

LOL, wait till you get to Paradise, it was hard to understand even with helps.

Spark Notes makes the two Shakespeare plays I have, and they look pretty good, so I'm sure it's a good study help.

And good on you for wanting to join the Navy, c-no. I wanted to join the Army because my dad was an officer but I can't join due to a medical issue.

I do have an e-reader, a Kindle that I got on Christmas 2011. I have a lot of free books, inexpensive books, reasonably-priced books and expensive books on it. I really don't read many of the free books I have, but it's good to know Gutenberg is there if I need it.

Thanks Dude. I find the idea of joining the military to be a rather, for lack of a better word, adult decision. I have anxiety in regards to joining since I feel that I might not fit to join the military whether it's failing the ASVAB, boot camp, or even my duties. On that same note, I do want to join so I could try to make more out my life, whether it's to help with college, serving my country, seeing the world, or even just doing what my dad and step-dad have done. Only thing I've been told if I want to join: finish college first so that way, I can go in as an officer. I feel doing that would put too much responsibility on me so really, I feel like I'm better of starting as a grunt who takes orders rather than the grunt who takes orders while telling others what to do.

I will say this about joining the Navy. I would choose to join after this spring since I do want to try and complete another semester at the community college I attend. Still, I should research the air-force just to see what they have to offer. Regardless, as I said in a previous post I have some anxiety at the thought but really I shouldn't worry about it just like with the college classes I attend. Besides, I do need to workout a bit. Need to practice push-ups so I don't look like Chris when he does them :julay: along with practicing my mile running and sit-ups. Also have to study the ASVAB along with researching what I could do in either the Navy or Air Force. I wouldn't last in the marines (though I'm sure I'd be a better marine then parkaydude91) and in the army.

I know someone who is going to Navy basic training next month. He wants to be trained to operate the nuclear reactors on submarines.

And yeah, work on your running and push-ups. That's what my dad said any recruit should do. I don't blame you for being nervous; serving in the Navy could be dangerous.

Don't worry about being the grunt who takes orders while telling others what to do. I know a bit about officers' training, and if it's like it was 35-40 years ago when my dad was in, the military believes in making you a follower before you become a leader.

Maintain a cleanliness routine for myself. I've already started, but 2014 should be a far more organized year.

Thanks GrandNumberOfPounds. Aside from nervousness, if I'm not able to join the navy then I may as well try to find another job thought that in of itself is something I hope to do during this school break of mine or at least during the Spring semester of college. As far as training goes, I just hope the one I choose is one I could do well. I wouldn't want to be an operator on the nuclear reactor of a submarine though since I feel that would over my head.

1) Don't suicide.
2) Get in a solid life rhythm.
3) Subdue record labels with demo tapes, resulting in being signed to a major indie label again.
4) Play live with a band.

Covered.

I resolve that 2014 will blow less than 2013.

POP QUIZ: All branches of the Service except one send the enlisted types into battle while officers stay generally safe behind the lines. The other branch does the opposite; it sends the officers out to die, and keeps enlisted personnel well back out of harm's way. Name it.

That's not entirely accurate. Officers O-3 and below (captains & lieutenants in the Army & USMC, lieutenants and ensigns in the Navy and Coast Guard) are with their troops in battle. Someone has to give orders to the platoons and companies. And of course in the Navy the captain is at risk as well.

And yes, the Air Force is the one branch which generally sends the officers to fight, so the usual order is flipped around. Of course, there are the PJ's (they rescue downed pilots) and air crews with enlisted personnel who are at risk.

But yeah, it's generally tougher to be a grunt in any of the services than an officer, with the exception of the Air Force.

Wasn't that your resolution last year? And the year before that?

I thought 2013 was better than 2012, 2014 seems like it's going to be really good

- Train
- Take my vitamins
- Say my prayers
- Be a real American

Surprisingly, these are pretty much my resolutions. Except replace vitamins with supplements for mental performance and take out the bit about praying (sorry Hulkster!).

Also I'm going to try to get good at chess and at Go. Maybe not champion good, but a competitive player.

Well, yeah. I keep failing. BUT NEXT YEAR WILL BE DIFFERENT. NO, REALLY.

Seconded.

But I also resolve to make new friendships, finally post my music online, move from this crap town I live in and lose a few more pounds. Easy enough, right?

finally learn how to play DnD
Finally beat Oblivion and Morrowind
Getting a job
actually posting more of my "art" online

I've been trying to learn since I was 13 and didn't get around to actually playing a game until I was 19.

But trust me, when you get into the grove of it, it's a lot of fun.
