The reformers believe tests like New York's Academic Literacy Skills Test can serve to weed out aspiring teachers who aren't strong students.

But the literacy test raised alarms from the beginning because just 46 percent of Hispanic test takers and 41 percent of black test takers passed it on the first try, compared with 64 percent of white candidates.

So cause colored folk weren't passing a high school level literacy test in order to teach kids, that obviously means that the test is racist and needs to be removed.

Just maybe... teachers should be fucking literate and able to read/write on at least a 12th grade level? Because they're, you know, teachers?

Also, lol, I love how some critics of the test are like "Well, it's more important to have non-white teachers than to have good teachers."

A federal judge ruled in 2015 that the test was not discriminatory, but faculty members at education schools say a test that screens out so many minorities is problematic.

"Having a white workforce really doesn't match our student body anymore," Soodak said.

It was a bit funny to read the article comments on Facebook and see crap like "well if only 64 percent of the top demographic is passing maybe we should look into changing the test for a better pass rate". Apparently the concept that the test is specifically there to winnow out those lacking competence in literacy and communication -- highly important skills in conveying information to other human beings in professions like teaching -- is alien. No, we must allow more to pass through the sieve!

For those curious as to what the actual test looks like, you can go here to look at how they handle a reading comprehension sample multiple choice, and here to look at their sample for free response. Some of those who have taken the test rate the difficulty around a SAT I Verbal level of difficulty.

There once was a time when a black knowing how to read was punishable by torture and death. Those that learned and taught their children in secret dreamed of a day when their descendants could receive an education as any white child could.
