New York education officials are poised to scrap a test designed to measure the reading and writing skills of people trying to become teachers, in part because an outsized percentage of black and Hispanic candidates were failing it.

The reformers believe tests like New York's Academic Literacy Skills Test can serve to weed out aspiring teachers who aren't strong students.

But the literacy test raised alarms from the beginning because just 46 percent of Hispanic test takers and 41 percent of black test takers passed it on the first try, compared with 64 percent of white candidates.

The board of ed, city counsel and mayor's office are always scheming to make sure the middle class of NY can't have nice things. When my parents were growing up they had what they called 600 schools where the violent, or disruptive children would be sent instead of allowing them to terrorize everyone else who wanted to learn something. I think those were done away with for being "racist" and probably would be considered "ableist" now too, meaning the overwhelming majority of delinquent students were black and many now would be placed in something like special ed or assigned a handler. When I was growing up zip code determined which public school you were assigned to, the schools were considered some of the best and parents of bright kids as far as other boroughs would commit mail fraud in order to get them in. Then the city decided zip codes are racist too and now a kid can go to any public school they want so long as they sign some kind of permission slip, and now the city instead of isolating autists and thugs evenly distributes them into decent neighborhoods to fuck it up for the rest of us.

The exam questions basically look like GRE questions. I mean, you should at least be able to do GRE level stuff when teaching.

The thing is that this doesn't fuck over the rich, who will just send their kids to private schools anyway, but definitely the Middle-Class, who will have to decide between trying to pay for their kid's college or just make them go to a private school. This will do no favors to anyone.

Good teachers are already hard to retain with the low pay and the hours you have to put in (not to mention the constant dumbing down of the curriculum). I've seen it for students, just not for teachers. The problem is that we're competing in a global world. You think China or Russia or Iran gives two fucks whether it meets some arbitrary diversity quota? Nope.

People who support this may claim to be progressive, but they are anything but. Regressivism is what they are dealing in and endorsing with this. It is pathetic.

As far as them being liberals goes, I'm not sure of that. The stupidity evidenced by this bunch is similar to that of Unschoolers and that crowd has arisen from the left and the right. Irreverence toward intellect is the uniting trait.

Thoughtful people with good intentions in mind for the children of these schools would be doing everything they could to ensure good results for the children--this is not that. This is kicking those who are down and worsening their chances. It's not liberal or conservative, it's :dumb:.

Education officials who do not speak against this hogwash are exactly the sort who need to be removed for things to be improved. This sort of situation also evidences (to me) affirmative action as being a conceptual failure that should not be proceeded with.

In seriousness though, I think this is more proof that modern mass public education isn't really about educating people and teaching them real life skills, just about cranking out as much easy unskilled labor as possible to serve the need for future burger flippers and cart pushers.

We had something like this if your kid could keep thier grades up they could go to any school they wanted. You had to get up at 4 in the morning and wait in line to sign up for this thing every year though.

The fact that they are letting teachers be incompetent because of diversity quotas is horrifying.

With Hispanic teachers, I can give their poor English skills a pass IF they are an immigrant or the child thereof and English is their second language, but that means they should study harder to pass the test again if they wish to teach.

For the black community, well, I hate to say this but it's their own damn fault. The black community in America has gained a strong sense of ethnic nationalism that has been intertwined with anti-intellectualism over the past few decades. Speaking and writing proper English, reading books, and doing anything remotely intellectual is seen as "acting white" and is condemned by the community as a whole, with said black intellectuals getting labeled as "sellouts" and "Uncle Toms". Things like BLM and the SJW movement have only worsened this issue.

Bill Cosby may be a scumbag rapist, but he was right about one thing. Anti-intellectualism is a plague upon the modern African-American community and many blacks today are more concerned about "keeping it real" and worried about "acting white" when they should be reading and learning proper skills and seeking a decent education so they can live a better life.
