A 22-year-old newlywed was killed during a New Year’s Day machete attack at a Dollar Tree, Ohio police say.

Officers in Upper Sandusky found Keris Riebel dead at the store where she worked following the attack at 4:25 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release.

An investigation revealed 27-year-old Bethel Bekele entered the Dollar Tree and approached Riebel, police said. Bekele then struck Riebel “numerous times with the machete,” according to Upper Sandusky police.

Police were called for a report of “a man waving a machete around inside the store” after striking the employee.

Bekele was found about a mile from the store and was detained, police said. He was charged with murder.

A motive for the killing is unclear, and police are investigating whether Bekele and Riebel knew one another.

Riebel was a 2019 graduate of Wynford High School in Bucyrus, about 20 miles east of Upper Sandusky.
“Keris was a beautiful soul, with a faith-filled heart,” the school district said. “She exuded genuine kindness to everyone she met and her smile was unforgettable. Keris was taken way too soon and will forever live in the hearts of the Wynford community.”

Riebel and her husband, Jordan, enjoyed their wedding celebration on Oct. 8, 2022.

A GoFundMe states Riebel recently graduated from college with a human resources degree, and she was looking forward to starting her career and having children with her husband.

“It was ripped apart from the both of them in a matter of seconds,” Jordan Riebel’s aunt said in the GoFundMe.

Family members told WBNS that Riebel “lit up the world with her smile.”

“Keris was the most genuine, kind, pure soul,” a loved one said on Facebook. “The senseless act of violence that took her young life is unimaginable.”

Upper Sandusky is about 60 miles north of Columbus.

Every time I read something like this, I think of this quote from The Green Mile.

We had us a dog. No particular breed, but gentle. Ready to lick your hand or fetch a stick. Just a sweet mongrel, you know the kind. In many way, a good mongrel dog is like your negro. You get to know it, and often you get to love it. It is of no particular use, but you keep it around because you think it loves you. If you're lucky you never have to find out any different.

I would not bring back slavery for all the tea in China. I believe we have to be humane and generous in our efforts to solve the race problem. But we have to remember that the negro will bite if he gets the chance, just like a mongrel dog will bite if it crosses its mind to do so.

Was on a work trip in a southern city and I stopped at a little mom and pop engraver/jewelry store to get a nice engraved item for my kid. Talking to the clerk, older lady who was nice and taking to me about my kids. Suddenly this black guy comes in, looking like Deebo (Tommy Lister) from the movie Friday. She gets very quiet and is keeping her eye on him.

To his credit, he was nice and respectful. Lots of "Yes ma'am, no ma'am. It was a pain finding parking around her ma'am" as he was picking up his chain that was being cleaned. The whole time she was very cold. I see on the guy's face he was taken a bit aback by how frosty she was being too him. Felt bad for him.

As soon as he left the shop she turns to me and says "whatever you do, don't get a pit bull. They might seem nice but don't trust them. Turn your back for a second and they will attack your family. " mind you, at no point was the topic of dogs every brought up.

This guy seems like a legit psychopath: it comes across loud and clear in his initial court appearance...

UPPER SANDUSKY—Bethel Bekele, 27, of Upper Sandusky, made his initial appearance in the Wyandot County Municipal Court Tuesday.

Bekele is charged with one count of murder, an unclassified felony punishable with up to life in prison.

Bekele is charged with the New Year’s Day death of Keris Dilgard Riebel. Riebel was working as a cashier at the Dollar Tree Store in Upper Sandusky. A 2019 graduate of Wynford High School, Riebel was married last October. She recently earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources.

According to the 911 call, Bekele walked into the store and struck Riebel in the back of the head with a machete. According to the caller, Riebel fell to the floor. Customers ran out of the store and called 911.

Wyandot County Municipal Court Judge James Ruhlen presided over the arraignment.

After Judge Ruhlen read the charges levied against Bekele, he asked Bekele if he understood the charges.

Bekele affirmed he understood and immediately asked for a court-appointed attorney.

Ruhlen explained to Bekele about his rights to an attorney and began an examination under oath to determine his indigence.

Under oath, Bekele told the court that he had worked two jobs recently but was now unemployed. He told the court he worked at Bob Evans and another (inaudible) part-time job. He leases a car and does not have other assets. He testified that he had $1300.00 in his checking account.

Based on his testimony, Judge Ruhlen found Bekele indigent and appointed attorney William Kluge to represent him.

Wyandot County Prosecutor Eric Figlewicz asked the Bekele be held without bail until a bond hearing could be set. Figlewicz told the court that Bekele is a substantial risk to the community:

“The State’s main and most vehement assertion is that the defendant be detained until a bond hearing is set. If the court is inclined to set bail at this time, the State would request a cash surety bond of not less than six million dollars with conditions.”

A few of those conditions included the surrender of his passport, a waiver of extradition, and a curfew.

Figlewicz told the court that Bekele had no strong ties to Upper Sandusky and had only lived there a short time. Bekele has family ties to North Carolina.

Figlewicz told the court that there is strong evidence against Bekele, including interviews with law enforcement, eyewitnesses, and surveillance footage.

There is no apparent relationship between the victim and Bekele. The attack was random and unprovoked, making Bekele even more of a danger to the general public, according to Figlewicz .

The victim’s family was represented in court by victim advocate Marnie Hahn. Hahn asked that a no-contact order be placed against Bekele to protect the victim’s family.

Judge Ruhlen asked Bekele if he wanted to make a comment regarding bail. He declined.

Ruhlen ordered Bekele to be detained until a bond hearing can be set in the near future.

A Preliminary Hearing is set for January 11 at 2 PM.

A Recording of the 911 call was released to Crawford County Now by Police Chief Lucas. The material in the call is disturbing and may not be suitable for some listeners.

There was no reason for his attack, he doesn't register any sort of concern for himself let alone his victim or the impact on her friends and family. A recent arrival to the area, living out of his leased car, two part-time jobs back to back and then unemployed, and now this bullshit out of the blue on New Years Day. What a nightmare.

“The State’s main and most vehement assertion is that the defendant be detained until a bond hearing is set. If the court is inclined to set bail at this time, the State would request a cash surety bond of not less than six million dollars with conditions.”

Absolute lunacy to even consider bail after this guy murders someone at random.
