US Nickelodeon wants its next child star to be trans or non-binary – and it’s roped in a trans kids’ TV legend to help

Nickelodeon and actor Michael D. Cohen have launched a major search for the next child star, and they want to cast a trans actor.
Cohen, the star of Nickelodeon shows Henry Danger and its spin-off, Danger Force, came out as trans in May 2019 – publicly disclosing what those around him had long known, which was that he had transitioned 20 years earlier.

Now, the youth-oriented network has partnered with the star of the number one live-action kids’ show on basic cable to find the next big actor. An actor who Nickelodeon would like to be trans.

Calling it the Michael D. Cohen Trans Youth Acting Challenge, the casting call asks aspiring trans and non-binary actors living in the US or Canada to submit audition tapes by 23 December. Twelve finalists will take part in a Zoom acting masterclass with Cohen, and then an online webinar with Nickelodeon’s casting team.

Cohen told The Advocate that he was inspired to launch the challenge after getting messages from trans youth who wanted to act but were afraid their transness would get in the way.

“It breaks my heart that these kids question their creativity or dreams because of their gender identity,” Cohen said. “So I wanted to do something that would help trans kids who love acting get access to opportunities that they wouldn’t ordinarily have.”

Cohen continued: “If communities who have been historically beaten down and disregarded are going to claim their equal place in our society, it needs to happen at least in part by people in positions of power opening up the gates and offering up a place to nurture.

“And that’s exactly what Nickelodeon is doing by being my partner in this project.”

He added that he wants trans youth to know that “there are adults out there who care about their journey as artists”, and that as well as having trans actors play trans roles, it’s also important that trans people play characters who don’t have trans experience.

“I want kids to know that their trans experience does not have to limit their possibilities,” Cohen said. “It doesn’t have to define everything they do, including the characters they play.

“My hope is that this initiative will increase the possibilities for these actors by expanding roles for them and also reinforcing their own belief in themselves.”

Nickelodeon hasn't been worth a shit since Avatar: The Last Airbender ended in 2008 and even then the channel was well past it's prime, classic Nick died for me when they canceled Invader Zim, Avatar was just a rare bright spot in an otherwise lame time.

I'm so thankful I got to be a kid in the 90s before all this shit.



But it could be argued the former is what allowed us to get to this point of the latter.

Spurred in part by the political climate — which in recent years has seen fraught public reckonings around issues related to gender — Cohen wants to publicly disclose a private fact that he has been sharing with colleagues on the set of Henry Danger: Nearly twenty years ago, he transitioned from female to male.


“I was misgendered at birth,” Cohen says. “I identify as male, and I am proud that I have had a transgender experience — a transgender journey.”

Cohen does not use the word transgender to describe himself, but he does view himself as part of a community that typically embraces that label, and he didn’t feel he could be an outspoken advocate until he made his history known. The actor has grown restless while watching the Trump administration roll back protections for transgender people in schools and the military, as Republicans have fought bills that would protect them from discrimination in public spaces.


“This crazy backlash and oppression of rights is happening right in front of me. I can’t stay silent,” Cohen says. “The level of — let’s be polite — misunderstanding around trans issues is so profound and so destructive. When you disempower one population, you disempower everybody.”

When I was a kid in the 90s I watched a healthy dose of old cartoons via reruns and if I liked a cartoon, I liked a cartoon, it didn't matter to me that it was "old", heck some of my favorite cartoons as a kid were the classic Looney Tunes, now modern and future generations have the stuff that was contemporary in my time to add to the pile as well, that's plenty.

It's the same deal with all media, modern western media is only interested in brainwashing you, with your entertainment a distant second, but the silver lining is we have decades and decades of film, TV, music, books and so on to choose from, all more easily accessible and in higher quality than ever before, so why bother with modern stuff?
