After 11 years since it's release and on/off-again attempts to play through it, I recently played through Nier Replicant on PS4. Let's discuss your thoughts, impressions and opinions on this. Did you ever play the original? How did you feel about this? My thoughts after seeing the game through all endings: Eh, it was alright. Automata was better.

Great game, though the backtracking for the last few endings got obnoxious after a while, cutting down the repetition would've been nice. I loved the new ending. The PC port really should be fixed by now though. There are work around for the bugs but they seem relatively simple to fix, and they're incredibly intrusive for people who don't know how to fix them.

The backtracking really shows how the world and its connecting dozen or so maps took such a back seat to the story.

genius level IQ. Can only hope to achieve the Kojima-like zen that is the inner enigma of Yoko Taro's autistic japanese mind.
Doubtful, since if not even Kojima can comprehend what goes into his mind, I doubt Yoko Taro knows what's inside of his mind. Well, aside from the fact that he likes big butts and he cannot lie. 2B got back.

Fantastic hd rerelease (i'm not calling it a remake because it really isn't), the combat was reworked in a way that was sympathetic to the original system, the new additions sat well between the old content and the old voice actors returned and again that's where the game really shines.

It's really good but just a little bit worse then automata. The shades were really cool enemies and the gameplay while being a copy of automata was still fun. I really liked the main cast as well.

Been playing this lately. Side quests are just as annoying as I remember and I can't be bothered to do most of them. Great OST, obviously, and the cast and dialogue are excellent.

For all the flaws in the side quests and the farming minigame, I actually like Replicant more than Automata. The difficulty seems better scaled to me because levels don't matter as much. In Automata, level affects damage so much that playing on hard has either one or two shot deaths or you're dealing one or two shot kills due to lack of level scaling. Here, it does matter for the old DLC, but not in the main quests. The characters in Replicant have more personality too and it's more consistent as a dark fantasy story. Automata has that alien fake-out nonsense and sometimes 2B's and 9S's lines seem to get swapped. For example, 2B should always be the character that knows more than she's letting on, but 9S is the one that explains how the Bunker is supplied. Likewise, since 9S is supposed to be a kid Nier reference, he should consistently be the fish out of water during the early game.

>creator prides himself on never making the same game twice
>proceeds to remake the first game after the second

Which is exactly why he described replicant as a “version upgrade” rather than a “remake”. Checkmate!

I really enjoyed my first 2 runs through the game, especially how it gave you different perspectives on the bosses. Although it did start to outstay its welcome when you have to go through them again almost unchanged to get the remaining endings, and having to go through it again just to do Kaine's section felt like it was wasting your time. Also, one small thing that I hated was having to press a button after every line of text, like reading a book where there's one sentence on every page. Still a really good game though, the world looks beautiful even with its washed out and limited colour palette.

Compared to the original game, this remaster looks pretty colorful. The original version of Replicant makes Nier's hair look blond due to the lighting. It's less obvious on Papa Nier in Gestalt. The 7th gen was not a very colorful time outside of the Wii.
