New documents filed Monday, February 26 reveal that videogame giant Nintendo is taking action against the creators of the popular emulator tool Yuzu.

The copyright infringement filing, from Nintendo of America, states that the Yuzu tool (from developer Tropic Haze LLC) illegally circumvents the software encryption and copyright protection systems of Nintendo Switch titles, and thus facilitates piracy and infringes copyright under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

Nintendo alleges that Tropic Haze's free Yuzu emulator tool unlawfully allows pirated Switch games to be played on PCs and other devices, bypassing Nintendo's protection measures.

The official Yuzu website suggests that the tool is to be used with software you yourself own: "You are legally required to dump your games from your Nintendo Switch" — but it's common knowledge, that this is not how these tools are primarily used.

The legal document claims that over a million copies of last year's The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom were downloaded prior to the game's official retail release.

Additionally, Nintendo's filing points to the success of Yuzu's Patreon page, highlighting how the project is actively supported by over 7,000 members. At time of writing, the Yuzu Patreon currently brings in close to $30,000 USD per month. Nintendo's filing alludes that this Patreon page has been actively engaged in promoting the emulator, and thus by extension piracy.

Emulator tools aren't inherently illegal, but the way in which Yuzu is being actively used and promoted is what Nintendo appears to be objecting to here.

As a result, Nintendo is now seeking a trial by jury, damages, and is demanding that the Yuzu emulator is shut down.

it is possible to hold a job and game for an absurdly long time every day. Wouldn’t recomend it though honesrly, you don’t get much sleep. Like only a couple hours.
Such is life in the 4HL, at least you sometimes have the weekends and holiday's.

I want to feel pity for them, but 40k a month on Patron was basically slapping Nintendo in the face and daring them to do something about it and lo and behold, they did. We're skirting the law with emulator shit, be subtle you morons. Don't rile up the multi-billion dollar company with a reputation for handing out lawsuits like these like they're candy.

If you took care if your controlers and actually cleaned them frequently that wouldn’t happen. Nintendo know the average person is a retard and after realising telling them to take care of the stuff did not work just dediced to take the hit on that.
I love Nintendo myself, but I really gotta address these points. First, the controller drift was a real problem. It was so notorious that Nintendo got sued over it and had to offer replacements to anyone that wanted one
Well of course they said that. Western Devs openly pirated or built off other people stuff and Pirating Stuff was how people lept Valve relevent while they were not making Halo games amd instead making a monopoly on the PC gaming market. After which they were as grumpy about pirates as the next. It’s not a service problem. It’s ‘i did not want to put in the work so justifying why I did it as if it was good’ while making sure others cannot do the same’
Gaben was right. When he set up Steam and fixed up the regional pricing, there was noticeable drop in piracy downloads in places like Russia. Offer a superior service and people will pay even if they know they can get it for free
It is. At the least they are missing out on one sale.
Not a lost sale if the person in question never intended to buy, which accounts for most pirates
If they weren’t going to buy the game at all why did they Pirate it? If you were never going to play the game you don’t get it in any way. It’s not hard.
With demos being practically dead, piracy has become one of the only consistent ways to actually try out a game to see if you like it without coughing up 60 bucks
You aren’t entitled to buy something. Either way it would still be a lost saile from somewhere if done through pirating. By it secondhand.
Can't complain about lost sales if you don't make the product available to them to even attempt the sale in the first place. And buying secondhand is a tossup between getting something broken or overpriced. I'm not telling Pablo to pay double the price on ebay because that's only way for him to get a physical copy.
Then maybe they shouldn’t buy luxery items. Or not spend all of their income on crap they don’t need.
I'll give you this one. Being broke is a weak excuse. I pirated all the time when I didn't have a job, but I'm not gonna say it was justified.
You can do that. There’s always a window in which you can buy games and return them. Regairdless people that do not pirate show off all of that on YT for free. You did not need to buy Pokemon SV to know it ran bad.
Lol, lmao even. Steam's arm had to be twisted into creating a refund policy and god help you if buy digital from Nintendo. It has become incredibly obnoxious to return games once they get your money.

If these guys want to start some shit they could try organizing a class action lawsuit against Nintendo for their shit controllers that break after 2 months and cost $100. I want this shit company to suffer as much as possible.
Already happened. It was so bad that Nintendo offered replacements for anyone who caught the drift. I sent in a controller myself when it happened to me.

If the Pirates weren’t going to buy the game they wouldn’t be playing it at all. Because the only way of playing it otherwise would be through buying. So it will always be a lost sale.

That argument of needing to pirate to try a game died years ago. Streamers now get paid to play pretty much any and all games to 100% completion before the game even comes out. Even the really bad games that no one eould want to buy get played by them becauxe they can make content shitting on the game. The average person has to pay nothing to buy a game. YouTube or Twitch has you covered for free.

how did nintendo fuck Yuzu so hard in comparison to dolphin and other emulators they wanted to nuke for years
Its the Switch: their golden calf and they desperately want to protect it. Kinda was predicting they were gonna win this based on that alone....I mean, this draconian approach is not new. Look at how they've been trying to "hackproof" the console for years.
