Nintendo announced Wednesday that it sold more than 3.5 million Switch 2 consoles, marking a new record for the company.

The Japanese company said that it’s the “highest global sales level” for any Nintendo device within the first four days of release and perhaps puts Nintendo in good shape to meet its goal of selling 15 million Switch 2 devices by the end of next March.

Excitement has swirled over the $450 device because it’s Nintendo’s first major console launch since the original Switch arrived about eight years ago. The original Switch ended up selling 152 million units since its 2017 release.

Nintendo released the Switch 2 on June 5, with hardcore gamers lining up for hours for the gaming console and Best Buy stores extending hours to meet demand.

Nintendo has made significant upgrades to the Switch 2 hardware to justify the hefty price increase, including a larger screen, upgraded versions of the Joy-Con controllers and new social features. It also has several new features, including a Game Chat function that lets gamers communicate with other players by tapping a button on the console.

Personally I love my Switch. What other console allows you to play Skyrim on the toilet in the bath? But as others have stated there’s no urgency to get a new one while this one works just fine. Maybe once a nice limited edition version comes out or there is a game I really want that can only be played on the new system then perhaps. Besides, I’ve heard it’s not waterproof….

Or I can pay a bit more and get something like a ROG Ally X and emulate the Switch 2 and damn near anything else, get gamepass access, as well as have access to nearly infinite games because I'm not locked to Nintendo's bullshit eshop. With access to store fronts like Steam that actually have deals and sales instead of keeping a 1st party title at full price despite being over a fucking decade old.

I am so glad I'm a PC fag and don't have to slave myself to the Console wars. I'll buy it when there's an IP release I actually want to play. The Nintendo store is more akin to a shitty Mobile Gaming warehouse than anything else these days. Can't imagine paying that much for the same Mario Kart game, and a Tutorial experience that costs $80.

OLED Switch 2 won't happen until they can make the current chips far more power efficient. The reason they went with an LCD is that it can do VRR, which allows them to reduce power drain. The current Switch 2 suffers from crap battery life as it is, without VRR it would probably dip below 2 hours in handheld mode. Once they can make the chips on a smaller process, and thus more energy efficient, they will release a new model that is OLED since they will be able to afford to ditch VRR and focus more on picture quality. Also, before anyone says it, yes, I know OLED VRR screens exist, but they are literally 2.5x as much as a quality traditional LED-LCD VRR screen. Nintendo didn't want to raise the price even further by using an OLED VRR screen, so they did the best they could with this price point and what screen they could use at said price point.

They can't even make that many in 9 months, Nintendo projected the ability to make between 7 and 8 million total by year's end, between the 4 million in the initial shipments and another 4 million by the end of the year, assuming production continues apace. That means in 9 months, assuming the same production pace, at most, we would see 10 million at 9 months, and 12 million total at 1 year at the absolute most.

I still don't understand where people think they will be able to emulate a Switch 2 using some current handheld PC. That won't be happening. Remember, when emulators first come out they run like shit and have incredible system requirements because an emulator always requires way more power for what they are doing as a result of the fact that the workarounds they need to get them working initially requires a significant amount of power as a result of the fact that is has to try and do so very quickly to keep coherency with very inefficient methods. It's only once most of the core system is emulated correctly that they can optimize stuff, which will take a few years after the emulator is created. So, 2 to 3 years at the earliest from now we will have a competent, functional Switch 2 emulator that will run on a decent laptop. If you plan to run it off of a handheld PC you're likely going to need one of the highest spec. ones available in 3 years time, if that is even enough. A current handheld PC is way too underpowered.

I think people are forgetting that all the PC handhelds so far have been AMD based. AMD hardware tends to emulate NVidia hardware poorly. Any laptop with a dedicated NVidia GPU will probably be able to run it far before it can run correctly on AMD hardware. Anything NVidia based can just translate the Ampere GPU calls into whatever version they are currently running of the NVidia hardware. NVidia GPUs can do this very efficiently. Anything AMD based literally has to translate it into a different, generic language that the AMD hardware can understand. That has a major overhead both in speed and resources. You can see that even with the current Switch emulation. It runs far better on weaker NVidia hardware than on AMD hardware that is more powerful. History will necessarily repeat itself due to the architecture that the Switch 2 is based upon.

Don't understand why you'd even want it at launch... only has Mario Kart and the series has been going downhill since Wii. It'll likely be a couple years before there is enough new games to be worth it.

I've never owned a Nintendo console. I don't get the hype behind it or any of the IPs. It's like when Apple fags tell you why Iphones are so good. I just shrug and continue using my cheap as fuck chink hardware, or my cheap as fuck PC.

The games are usually of good quality or better, they are almost always fun, there are rarely any bugs and they don't pander too much.

It's a lot like Dragon Quest.
