I have a strong suspicion that come the Fall/Winter season, Donkey Kong Bonanza will go down as probably Game Of The Year. I just keep sensing that more people would rather play that than Mario Kart World.
The only real competition so far is Clair Obscur and Monster Hunter (and Fatal Fury, but I don't think fighting games--especially non-Street Fighter ones--win many GOTYs), so Donkey Kong deserves it.

However, I bet some indie slop like Deltarune or Silksong will win the Game Awards, whichever is more woke. I guess the FromSoft glazing could also continue with Elden Ring Nightreign. I think Death Stranding 2 flopped and nobody talks about it.

Sonic Racing, Silent Hill, and Ninja Gaiden 4 are on my radar, but like Fatal Fury they don't seem like the kinds of games to win GOTY. Snake Eater remake is worth mentioning, and Metroid Prime 4 if it actually releases.

It wouldn't surprise me if Bonanza at least gets a nomination (it's basically a sequel to Odyssey, which did receive a nomination). MK World has a low chance of making it in given its derivative nature and mixed audience reception.

>calls other overhyped indie games slop
>likes the store-asset filled, fake-indie, FOTM game that poorly uses the already odious UE5

🤨

Anyways, Monster Hunter isn't getting in because of the disastrous launch. Fighting games are anathema to the Dorito Pope, his panel of Cardinals, and the broader gaming audience so Fatal Fury isn't going to be nominated. E33 is very likely to be nominated and could win. Death Stranding 2 could be ushered into a nomination by papal decree, but given the aforementioned flaccid release I doubt it will receive it (at least one nomination in the other categories is all but guaranteed thoughever). By that same token, Geoff will not offend Kojimbo by giving Konami a nomination for any of its (frankly not good) remakes of his games. Deltarune is ineligible because it's not finished. If Silksong is even halfway as good as HK was it's a shoe in for a nomination and could very well win it. ER Nightreign is not getting nominated, nor is Sonic Racing, or NG 4. MP 4 could, especially if it pushes the technical limits of the Switch 2.

Probably Kirby or Mario Kart, at the rate shit is burning
Kirby is just DLC, I can see MKW but it really isn't impressive to me and most of what I see is modest praise or complaints.

I heard Clair Obscur isn't woke and it looks interesting, so I refrain from the slop label for now.

Sounds about right I guess, but I don't see MP4 pushing anything considering it's cross-gen. What's your reasoning for Nightreign not getting nominated though?

Picked up SRWY bit of a shame it kept the same mission structure from 30 but it's great to see difficulty modes actually having difficulty

Agreed, and I'm not sold on the whole telekinesis gimmick, after 18 years they had better have much more...

The default Varia Suit looks incredible, but it's getting replaced with that "3rd eye" shit and the new red suit looks ass to me. The graphics look great and Sylux has me interested, but the guy's been AWOL for a year+. The new planet seems cool, but the planet's name sucks and the one Yamamoto theme we've heard doesn't do it for me at all. It sounds like knockoff Prime 3 instead of something fresh and unique. I hope I'm savagely wrong about that because I long for good Metroid music to return...

It's impossible for it to live up to MP1, just like it was for MP2 (didn't play MP3), so just keep expectations in check and as long as it's not woke I think it'll be fine.

RIP for the MP 4 nomination, nonetheless I hope it's good. Regarding Nightreign, it's a Battle Royale* spinoff of ER meaning it has none of the things that made ER appealing to the panel (Another example to demonstrate my reasoning is that if naughty dog actually made TLOU online it wouldn't have received a nomination in spite of the prolific glazing that TLOU 2 received). Maybe it'll get a nomination for one of the other categories.

Have they substantially fixed any of the gripes people have had about MK World yet, or is that momentum just gone and people have moved on to, well, Bonanza now that I think about it?
Nope, still a straight line simulator. In response, the dedicated MK community is either using a discord to matchmake or going back to MK8. One can intuit from online discussion that the casual audience has moved on to DK Bonanza, but I imagine a non-insignificant portion still play MK World given it's the sole multiplayer offering on the Switch 2.

BOTW also was cross-gen. It did rather well as I recall.

Do those types of multiplayer games never win?

In general the main category hasn’t tended to feature competitive multiplayer games (co-op on the other hand does have more representation). In 2017 PUBG got a nomination, but that can be explained by the BR genre being quite novel at the time.

I’d reckon that is because when the media is looking for a technical/graphical “wow factor” open-world tends to fulfill that criterion. MP 4 isn’t going to have that so it’d need to be graphically impressive to fulfill that want. If it doesn’t have it it needs something else (massive critical/audience success, being an indie darling, etc.) I don’t foresee that happening but you never know, and far be it from me to claim that GOTY decision-making is a science in any way.

You're missing the big one. It Takes Two outright won its year. Is it different from Nightreign? I dunno, probably, I've never played either.

This year I see E33, Bananza, BF 1 (assuming its actually good), Metroid 4 if it comes out and Nightreign as the noms. Down year, shame. Actually, wait a minute, the It Takes Two guy released Split Fiction this year, that almost certainly gets in, probably at Nightrein's expense. E33 probably the game to beat?

People actually care about game awards? Just give me a good game, I don't give a dick about the opinions of shills.
GOTY is only relevant as a cudgel in forum discussions, in much the same way that numberfagging about sales or metacritic is. Somewhat like the real papacy, the supreme Dorito Pontiff Geoff’s awards are ex cathedra and you have to follow it when I agree with the decision but if I don’t agree it’s one of the fallible ones you should ignore.

I see, yeah it probably won't happen then.

Nah, it's just something to talk about.
