Can't seem to filter everything except the Nintendo store but it looks like it's stuck at 60$ despite being like 9 years old. Having a single day a year with half price doesn't really negate my argument that the store sucks.
You're supposed to look at the price history chart, not at what its at right now. Though, I'll point out that its currently five dollars off at Walmart, so its not 60 dollars right now either. Yeah, yeah, big deal, price of a burger. Simple fact is that the nation's leading store is currently selling it for less than what you've said.
 
You seem to be suffering from /v/brain and think that anything that isn't smashing all previous records and dominating the competition is automatically a flop. As for Mario, it's consistently been the best selling franchise on almost every console Nintendo has released, the main exceptions are getting beat by Pokemon on some of the handhelds. So it's clear that people who buy Nintendo consoles always buy up Mario games. I think what you're missing here is that there's other factors that contribute heavily to whether people buy a Nintendo console at all regardless of what exact software exists on the system.
This is backwards thinking. "The Mario game sells well on this system so Mario must always sell system." This of course ignores the sales of those games and the sales of the console relative to all games. Mario made the NES a household name and the system went on to sell 60 million (a lot for that time). The SNES sold less despite having another Mario title. Why did it work for the NES and not the SNES. N64 comes out and sells EVEN LESS despite having another Mario game. And the first 3D one at that. Again, why did Mario do worse? And yes, Mario 64 sold less than World by a lot (20M vs 11M).

Unlike Sony, Nintendo systems sell because of their games. But Nintendo fans have a problem with accepting that flop systems (of which Nintendo has many) were due to the games. Mario wasn't as exciting as he was in the 80s so people weren't going to buy a system just because it has Mario. People want to twist themselves into a pretzel to justify what a system under performed and it has to be for all these reasons. Nintendo has always competed with other consoles based on the quality of their games and when the system flops, its because of the games.
Almost nothing will excite people like Mario did in the 80's. It was a smaller hobby at the time and yet Mario still sold like crazy, so proportionally speaking it had a bigger impact back then than almost any game since due to how revolutionary it was.
I think your missing the point. The point is Mario, an old brand, isn't going to excite people to spend the several hundred dollars to buy a console. Since the 80s, there have been plenty of gaming phenomenons: Fortnite, Minecraft, GTA, Pokemon ect. Even something like Sonic gave Nintendo a run for its money because it was new and fresh. You've played Mario before. You haven't played Sonic. This is the core of what I'm getting at. A new console needs a new experience. Flooding it with old stuff doesn't work. Even looking at the Wii U and 3DS you see this. Nintendog and NSMB Wii sold a fuck ton. But when they were launch titles for the new systems, they sold a lot less. No one wanted to buy a console to play Nintendogs AGAIN or Mario Bros AGAIN. This is why Nintendo needs to constantly reinvent themselves and their successful systems usually have a game thats a new IP or a complete reinvention of an existing one (i.e. BoTW or even DKC)
N64 did not flop. Underperforming =/= flopping. N64 sold less than SNES, but SNES sold less than NES and that didn't mean it was a flop.
TheN64 only sold 33 million. This was a 16 million (33%) decline from their last system. Their competition sold over 100 million units. The Xbox One was considered a flop and sold almost double that. It was a fucking flop.

You're the one thinking of things backwards. People didn't buy an NES just because Mario was on it. People bought Mario because they had an NES, and they bought NESs because it was competently marketed and there was no real competition at the time. There's similar outside reasons why every console did as well as they did. Your argument doesn't even make sense because it's acting like Nintendo only makes Mario, or never makes new IPs. They do. The Wii U had Splatoon for instance, which was a massive hit. It still didn't outsell 3 Mario games on the console because Mario is that popular. Your entire argument is predicated on the idea that Nintendo isn't making anything new that could take Mario's place, but they make new stuff often. Nothing has taken Mario's place because people want Mario. But just having Mario doesn't affect exactly how well a given Nintendo console does in the market because no one game is so important as to be able to do that for any console.

Nintendo system sell because of their first-party games because other factors made them lose third-party support for several consoles. That's a bad thing that affected the sales of those consoles. Nintendo's first-party support only goes so far, which is something you're missing.

Dumb comparison. Not only was the console market relatively smaller back then, but Nintendo never sold their consoles at a loss like Sony and Microsoft do, so Nintendo made profit off each Nintendo 64 sale. It underperformed, but Nintendo was still raking in money in those years. Meanwhile, the Xbox division of Microsoft has literally never turned a profit, even during the 360 years. It's an anchor around Microsoft's neck that they only keep out of a stubborn desire to keep a foothold in the gaming market.
 
Replacing Mario might be more important if they hadn't whored him out for everything - there's not a genre of game you can mention that hasn't had a Mario version.

Coming off the strength of the movie they're not going to rumble his webs much.

It seems Nintendo has stealthily added a DRM (Digital Rights Management) measure to the app. The consistent blocking of previously recordable videos suggests that this isn’t a sporadic change but rather a more permanent adjustment to content access within the app. The last app update occurred nearly three weeks ago, hinting that this could have been an underlying feature activated recently.

I'ver seen a few unboxing videos where they think showing the contents for three seconds will call off the Nintendogs. I certainly wouldn't risk it. There's also people who fear that the Switch 2 could brick if they mess with it too much before the 5th. It's Nintendo so it's a big possibility.

Naturally, you can circumvent this by simply filming your phone's screen (as demonstrated in the above video – albeit possibly unintentionally), but this is nevertheless a bit of a blow for the potential archival of promotional material.

Nintendo doesn't care about archiving a goomba's ass. And even less so now with the key cards.

It prevents people from sitting on potentially vulnerable units. It's also an awful lot like the original Xbox One reveal. Can't get online? Just buy a Switch 1.

This means that you can't play the system without connecting to it online, which means that any factory reset consoles are bricks once Nintendo removes support.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if the firmware update is gigabyte sized which would mean anyone dumb enough to buy it day one would likely won't be able to play it due to too many people downloading it at the same time.

You'd think fans of Nintendo would want to have the company make consoles and games that are playable in a decade. Legitimately the only way to play their old content is piracy.
 
Another interesting consequence to this "You must connect to the internet to use this console for the firs time" is that anyone who sits on one hoping for a jailbreak may find that only a console that has been online and updated to the latest offered firmware is capable of being jailbroken.

Alternatively, it may be that consoles that haven't ever been online and updated may be the only ones that can be jailbroken.

Nintendo is putting the "sit on it and wait until a jailbreak" people in a nasty conundrum.

I would almost guarantee that Nintendo's servers will crash on Day 1.

I'm sure someone will make the first Switch 2 sacrifice eventually. I'm curious to see what can be done. And we will definitely see a lot of day wun people crying that they can't update because the servers are crashing. Your best bet it to wait a few days. You'll live. No one needs Mario Kart that bad.

The servers will be that much more overloaded with all the people needing to download games digitally and/or with "Game-Keys" since very few of the titles at launch being offered are on cartridge. They will also be further burdened with people downloading the compatibility and upgrades for their Switch 1 games to run them on the Switch 2.

I don't see how Nintendo plans to be able to keep their CDN up with that level of stress.
