I think what helped Odyssey is
>You had a generation of kids that grew up on Mario 64 and this game was a lot like it
>The Switch 1 wasn't just MARIOOOOOOO. It launched with a massive Zelda game and had a good variety of games that, while not "hardcore games for hardcore games" were not sugary sweet enough to alienate young adults. Even 1-2 Switch was made in a way so it could appeal to young adults
I think what helped is that Odyssey had way more ambition placed in it than an entire decade of Mario titles combined. The capture mechanic added a lot to the game and how you can experiment and scope out the world with various abilities and playstyles.

More importantly though, the tone and art direction were on point. It was the most cinematic Mario game since Galaxy 1 adding a bit more maturity to the presentation. The art was a nice hybrid of realism and cartoon. Mario looked fantastic with all the details added to his model and the worlds had very distinct and, for lack of a better word, mature presentation. It was a Mario game with a realistic T-Rex you could pilot, a New York inspired city-scape with actual humans, and tons of worlds clearly taking direct inspiration from real-world cultures. This is without mentioning the god damn Dark Souls world with the dragon that everyone has a massive memory of:

This was in a fucking Mario game, it is surreal.

Odyssey just had the developers on something. Hell, even give credit to Bowser's Fury. That side mode cooked with one of the best Bowser designs that added real weight to the world.

They clearly went all out only to never do it again and drop the next Mario title as a cutesy colorful romp with character designs taken straight out of the NSB playbook. The game felt lamer than a New Soup with its overly easy difficulty that got covered up by whatever gimmicks and an overly animated and baby-ish appearance. Mario has had any edge thoroughly removed.

But they are bringing the Virtual Boy back. That's the real system seller.
>Virtual boy classic

Ah yes, bring back the worst selling nintendo console of all time. I cannot wait to pay 100$ actual dollars for the "Virtual Boy Acessory" just to play 14 poorly emulated games and have extreme eye strain in minutes because they're red and fucking black.

What are you DOING nintendo holy shit my sides

Seemed alright.

Kind of interested in the new fire emblem existing in the future of Three Houses with that Sothis drop. Three Houses felt like it established a larger lore but never capitalized on it. It's been a while but I remembering finishing the game first on the Deer house and that house builds the potential for greater things..then the game ends.

everything else felt...okay. Pokemon ZA seems like it'll be fun. I'm shocked Digimon time stranger isn't on switch but there was a fair amount of pokemon talk so I'm guessing g that cut them out of anything for a year.

The Odyssey team made DK, so don't expect a new 3D Mario any time soon (at least 5 years).
Mario Wonder came out in 2023, so a new 2D Mario will still take at least 3 years.

One of the best parts of Metroidvania games is the interconnected world design.
An open world that takes you from level to level basically destroy this aspect (as we saw in Elden Ring).
Metroid itself of all games doing this just seems like a bad decision.
The Wonder team is also the Maker team. They can shit one of those out every other year if they needed to and kept it simple. Wouldn't be terribly surprising if we got Wonder 2 in 2026 (Maker underperformed after the first game.)

To add to the "race autism" of Tomodachi Life, any "white" miis are probably just intended to be Japanese, Nintendo makes games for their Japanese players first I would assume
Asian mii's a are slightly more yellow/tan than the white ones and have black hair. It's why I counted them separately as it can be hard to tell at times. I also chose the direct trailer from today's nintendo of america direct which are localised and different to the japanese trailers.

I think the Samus bike thing is supposed to be open-air segments that connect separate areas, like the space travel in Prime 3. It's a little off character for her to ride a bike around, though
I don't like how its just fully third person. Prime games do use third person for morph ball and cutscenes, but other than that the whole game is in first person view and it does a lot to add to the immersion. Prime 3 kept all the ship interaction in first person, with you controlling the ship from the cockpit. This seems too far in my opinion and I feel like it takes you out of the game.

Pokopia, the Pokemon Minecraft game, is being made by Bandai-Namco, who also did the DQ Builders games. I am secretly hyped for it but am not making any purchase plans just yet. Actually... was that one S2 exclusive or is on S1 too?

THE DK BANANZA DLC IS $20

THAT MAKES THE FULL GAME $90

YOU CAN FUCK RIGHT OFF, JEWTENDO

THESE GAMES SOLD FOR $20 EACH NOT EVEN A DECADE AGO. I'M ABOUT TO HAVE A FUCKING STROKE
Bad luck in this economy Goytendo. Absolutely Disgusting. Still nothing compared to BOTW's sequel DLC that took 6 years to make and cost 70$. I feel for tech illiterate people in this era, I really do... anyway, what game to play today? Hmm, what to play?...
options.webp

Why is there such discourse over Samus riding a bike? It makes perfect sense for her to use one for terrain exploration. Were you expecting her to use the Morphing Ball? That is meant for tight places where she would not be able to fit or move in.

I absolutely guarantee there will be an open-world boss fight where you have to fight the legs of a giant robot thing that plays like shit and the framerate drops to like 10fps.

Switch 2 desperately needs some variety in its exclusives. Kart racers, farming games and lots of quirky little titles that feel more like demos. The lineup is just uninspired and if it were any other company, they'd be raked over the coals for it. But Nintendo gets a pass by virtue of being Nintendo.
It definitely needs a game with more meat. Zelda at launch helped a lot with this. Same for having Xenoblade within the first 9 months. I guess there is Fire Emblem but its a different beast. Having that plus a really good release cadence made it so the Switch never felt like it had a drought. The Switch 2 is the exact opposite

Also, some people will disagree with me, but I think nowadays every console needs a live service free to play game. Look at PS5. The reason its held on despite selling no games is it has games like Fortnite, Apex, Genshin and GTA Online. They keep updating it and it keeps you in Sony's ecosystem and softens the blow of the price. Nintendo has similar games that get updates but nothing like Sony has.

That's a good point. I forgot how varied Mario Odyssey's art was. I would still say it wouldn't help much because, on the surface (and though a lot of the game) it still is kind of sugary sweet. It works on a system like Switch which had enough to not feel like your playing on a Fisher Price toy but not the Switch 2 which is just a baby console only man babies can afford. Switch did a much better job of having games that would still colorful but not off-putting. Splatoon and even ARMS fit the bill. Nintendo needs to either bring back an IP that has a bit more grit or to try and make one. F-Zero would be a great candidate for this to be honest. You cant rely on third parties to do that job for you Miyamoto. Ya fucking tried that with RE4; all that happened is Capcom took it to Playstation once it became clear it didn't change the perception of the purple lunch box. Will probably be the same for Fromsoft's new game.

I would say 3D World is cotton candy bullshit though. Its the game where Mario runs around in a cat suit and goes MEOWWIE ZOWIE. Its designed for furries and 6 year olds.

BUT THE SCALE IS MASSIVE

IT'LL BREAK NEW GROUND!!!

I didn't particularly enjoy the planet hopping of 3, it takes you out of the game world, and being able to actually control the ship would've been a cool trade off of that, already I think the motorcycle could be a better idea, although it could just be a silver lining because the Switch 2 has no games

This Direct was a day before Mario's 40th anniversary. I expect the Zelda Direct to be sometime in February 2026 near the 40th anniversary of Zelda.

But they are bringing the Virtual Boy back. That's the real system seller.

I remember someone who worked for Nintendo saying that they tried to get them to remake Wario Land VB as a WiiWare title and was shot down simply on account of the fact that they didn't want to remind people that Virtual Boy was ever a thing.

Could someone please go check to make sure that Hell didn't just freeze over?

They ran out of stuff to port.

Anyways, the 14 games they announced is lik 75 percent of the console's total library. I didn't have time to look through but it looked like Bound High, which was finished, never released and eventually leaked (and is also more highly regarded than most of the released titles,) is missing so I don't think any Star Fox 2 situations are going to occur. Not immediately, anyway.

As to them needing the fake VB unit, its to make the 3D work, obviously.
