Popular alternative Twitter client Nitter's flagship domain nitter.net has been knocked offline due to Njalla ("NameCheap for Criminals") stealing the domain. Njalla's justification is that Nitter hosted illegal content. The URL provided by Njalla is a /enc/ URL which just converts base64 images into images. You can put any image there and it will render. Njalla is a registrar known for providing domains to piracy websites and diy hrt websites. It is also known for refusing to work with the Kiwi Farms because "they do not do business with transphobes," only criminals. Remember that Njalla only serves criminals. If you are not a criminal, Njalla does not want your money.

A funny thing to note here is that the image link, which first points at nitter.it, is a /enc/ link which only gets created by Nitter if the instance admin enables base64 link encoding for media proxying. This is not enabled for nitter.net, so I know for a fact someone copied an image from another instance (presumably nitter.it), changed the domain, and sent a complaint to Njalla.

I have come back to suggest that Kiwifarms do not use Njalla. They own your domain and will essentially steal it if you get any complaints.

I had at least 6 domains taken because I transferred them over to Njalla and I get an abuse complaint that caused them to seize all of my domains and they refused to let me transfer them out. If you know Peter Sunde, he was part of the Pirate Bay crew, but that doesn't stop them from being far-left asswipes that will seize and steal your domains for no reason, which is essentially what happened to me.

I love how they obfuscated the email and hid the actual urgent message behind a link so now they can claim Zedeus received the message and did nothing. I love how they didn't investigate the supposed infringing content. I love how they're so lazy they just tossed an unrelated domain in because the complainant said so.

Nope. You can go to nitter.it right now and it's still up and not suspended. Its registrar is OVH. Zedeus was fucked here either way if Njalla is holding him accountable for nitter.it, a domain that he has zero control over.

Nitter has worked perfectly fine for me. It was just a matter of finding the right instance. Some of them broke when Elon implemented anti-scraping measures, but many of them were able to work around it. nitter.net was one of them.

Yes, using ghostarchive.org on a nitter.net page has been a pretty much instant way of archiving a tweet + most of the rest of the thread its in (I'm talking like five seconds), and has been my go-to for the last few weeks. Hopefully zedeus is able to get another instance up and running soon, his has worked the absolute best for me.

I've always archived through the nitter.poast.org instance and ghostarchive can archive twitter links directly (though today the entire site seems to be unable to archive anything even non-twitter).

I'll stop shitting up the thread on a final note: I think this is probably the most egregious example of retarded Internet companies caving to the e-mails of lunatics because Nitter is one of the least objectionable sites I can possibly imagine. At least with the Kiwi Farms and Sharty, an argument can be made that the content of the site is just too heinous to let stay up despite being legal (obviously this is a retarded sentiment but it's not the point) Nitter is literally just a frontend for Twitter. It has no original content of its own, no community of its own, etc. It's just a fucking proxy to show you content from Twitter, one of the biggest sites on the Internet which has absolutely no problem staying online. It's a perfect illustration of how unfair and faggy this weaponized complaint e-mail shit is because it shows that you aren't even safe from it if you make the most benign and impossibly inoffensive sites imaginable.

If I understand correctly, it seems like the domain wasn't even hosting the content in the first place. Either Njalla didn't bother to check the links themselves and they expected the registrant to handle it without even validating the complaint in the first place or they wanted to find a reason to take the nitter.net domain offline.

Considering the ideological leanings of the people behind Njalla, they don't like the fact that nitter offers an alternative to the Twitter experience.

I think the lesson here is that you should never trust your domains with a non-ICANN accredited registrar or service.

Njalla can and will take your domains (they resell their domains from Tucows) and will hardly ever give them back.
