'No Stupid Questions' (NSQ) Internet & Technology Edition

Never take the stock install when you buy a computer at retail anyway. God only knows what kind of bloatware and worse it'll come loaded with. Just reformat and reinstall your preferred operating system when you get the machine.
Windows has a Reset option now which helps, but you are still dealing with a bloated OEM OS image. Can you still download a fresh image from Microsoft and use the OEM key to register it? That's what I did back in the day.

Of course, nowadays I just use a hacktivated copy of the latest LTSC build, you get Windows but almost none of the bloat.

Alright, based on previous posts here, I ordered a custom hp laptop with windows 10 pro. Because custom spec, I have already waited a month with no updates on their "tracker", expected whatever.

Last night, I get an email from these faggots that goes: "hP iS GiViNg yOu gOoD BoYs a WinDoWs 11 UpGraDE FOR FREEEEEEEE!!!!"

I emailed and they told me "well you will start with 11 but you can revert back." which is an answer I do not like at all, as either
a) what telemetry/other shit may stay on in the background when you do revert back?
b) what about revert process itself? I have no idea about the process itself, what if it requires an internet download? I did not want to set up windows 10 on internet to avoid the windows account and bs updates that fuck with the computer.

Do I call and demand they "give me 10 or i'm cancelling my order" or am I over-reacting on a privacy/anti-bs updates and the revert is simple and honest?
So you're fine with 10's telemetry but 11's is beyond the pale? Are they really that much different?

Anyway, if you still need to boot up 11 far enough to download an installer for 10 or whatever, just fill in whatever forms it forces you to complete with junk. Your name is asdf asfdadsf and you live at at 123 asdf street. You're soon going to be blowing that data away anyway so who cares. If you're concerned about being geolocated or whatever, do it at a coffee shop or public library.

If it starts up with Windows 11, how would I access "windows 10" to reformat to unless you are referring to the 10-day grace period? My preferred OS would be windows 7 but I don't have access to that.

Windows 10 has its shit known, and more importantly, because it is known there are programs like shutup10 that tell it to fuck off in various ways. Windows 11 maybe fucked for who knows how long, and I rather not be a guinea pig for windows: mac edition. Hell, I'd probably just get a mac book at that point. That said, appreciate the advice.

Follow-up Question: not an expert on ssd, but will reformatting fuck up my storage/ram? I know rewriting data alot can fuck with it, but not too keen on the details.

You'd have to do it thousands of times for it to matter nowadays and usually it's only a problem if you use the professional drive wipers where it rewrites the entire disk multiple times as part of the wiping process (usually done with drives that stored sensitive data). Your standard formatting done by your OS of choice isn't going to do anything like that.

Good to know, thanks.

Microsoft gives away the ISOs for Win10... at least for now.

You might even try just using your Win11 serial number in it, these days they seem to be pretty loose about what they accept.

I upgraded the processor on my gaming pc and now my computer thinks my second and third hard drives are 512mb each. They're 1tb and 3tb. Any tips on how to fix this?

click the windows key + r and paste in this:
diskmgmt.msc
see if you can see the drives there, do not be afraid to attach a photo of that window so we can glean more information, there shouldn't be any identifying information there.

Check if a third-party program like CrystalDiskMark can identify them correctly or if it follows Windows idea of that they are. Oh, and try unplugging them then plugging them in.

For anyone that doesn't know, you can use "Responsive Design Mode" in Firefox, pick Android, Apple, whatever, refresh and then download the ISO from that site itself. It use to let you do that directly but they seemed to have removed that option. I'm sure Chrome has something similar to the Firefox mode to download the ISO from Microsoft direct.

And yeah, serials are pretty easy, you can just buy one off ebay for $10, I've purchased 2 over the past 3 years, numerous formats, and never had a problem.

>Paying for M$
not even once
These days I actually welcome the opportunity to pay for software, as long as it's a perpetual license. Half the reason software is so predatory these days is because companies feel obligated to either subscriptionize their products or turn them into free-to-use data miners.

So I archived some shit on a cow,but left my laptop at a friend's house so now I can't access the list until I get back there next week.

How is thebest way to search the Archive.is site? I tried searching for the original website (ex: cowfirstnamelastname.org archive.is ) or the original website url within the archive search there, and all I get is one article and the rest are Russian. I know Google is picky with how u ask and quote marks and such, but I'm an overwhelmed Boomer, so I'm sure the way I'm asking and searching is all wrong. It was all done last week so I thought it would be easier for me to find.

Not sure if I should put the cow name here or not but I wanted to get better with googlefu anyways. But it's the cow I made a PG thread on but then was rewritten better by another kiwi and posted in lolcows.

ETA: why are screenshots getting all distorted and unreadable when I receive them via text? They're clear when made and sent but arriving to me totally fuzzy. Is it my shitphone or the shit network? I'm so confused.

Eta2: huh I wrote Archive dot IS above and I see that when I edit post, but then it is changed to archive dot md when I save so what's with that

Thanks to the techie kiwis, we appreciate you. Well this bitch does at least. I've read thru this thread and learned a lot of good shit and I apologize I can't keep track of the latest flavor of archive sites

What in particular are you trying to do? Do you just want to see all of the pages that have been archived under a particular URL? If so, enter the URL in the "I want to search the archive for saved snapshots" field.

If you want to search the archive for any pages that match a particular keyword, unfortunately the site doesn't support that.

Whoever's sending them to you probably has their phone and/or the messaging app configured to compress the images before sending to reduce their file size and thus mobile data usage. How to disable that will vary depending on what messaging service they're using, but hopefully that's enough info to find the correct setting or search for an answer.

Can anyone recommend me a good quiet low-wattage PSU that doesn't cost a fortune? I'm replacing a 145W power supply in an old AT computer because it blows. Noisily.

I was thinking of this 300W beQuiet model, but it seems to be difficult to get in America.

I think it needs to be the same size and shape as an ordinary PSU, so not one of those picoPSUs or SFF models.

Seasonic PRIME 600 Titanium SSR-600TL 600W 80+ Titanium is the best you can get, but you'll pay out the ass for it $150

if you want to be reasonable something like the Corsair CX Series 450 Watt 80 Plus Bronze that is if you cant get the be quiet which I would recommend.
