nah, I would be using it to remote into home from work on my cheap chromebook rather than bringing my old laptop in
OK then yeah, Chrome Remote Desktop like the other guy said unless you want to fuck around with setting up an ssh tunnel or vpn on your home network and opening ports on your home network.

Some routers do have a VPN built right in nowadys, though, which would allow you to use VNC or RDP.

If it's not local, then use a VPN that ChromeOS supports natively (I think some may support Wireguard now) or a VPN app from the Play Store (like ZeroTier) to make the connection, and the MS RDP app.

While you could run RDP clients within the Linux dev environment on ChromeOS, there's not that much advantage to doing that. And if you wanted to do the VPN within the Linux dev environment, VPN support is not great on there (it runs a cut down kernel that can't load modules like the PPP and other modules that are used by some VPN clients). I suppose if I was going to do it all within there, the right way to do it would be to set up the SSH server on windows and enable RDP, and then use the ssh client on the Linux dev environment on the Chromebook to connect to there and forward the RDP port to it, and then use xfreerdp to connect to the RDP server on windows.

I want to know if this build looks okay. I'm replacing a desktop which was pretty top of the line a decade ago, but I'm mostly looking for something which will last and handle 2D art programs. I didn't add a cooling option because the case comes with 2 fans (let me know if this is a retarded move). Don't want to go above $800 but can be convinced otherwise.

Looks pretty decent, but I would recommend upgrading to a faster RAM speed. Ryzen chip speeds are synced to memory speeds, so getting the fastest RAM you can afford will be an upgrade you may actually be able to feel depending on if you do any CPU heavy processing/rendering. The cooler on the Ryzen 5 will be good enough, but I threw a Thermalright Peerless Assassin on my Ryzen 2700X and it handles the temps a lot better than the Wraith cooler, also without the fan constantly running at a high (LOUD) speed.

I'd recommend buying the better cooler and building your PC once, because to install a better cooler later (if you hate the stock one) you have to take the motherboard entirely out and install a stabilizing backplate under the CPU socket. Best to be done all at the same time :)

The price difference for RAM isn't that much so upgrading makes sense in addition to what you mentioned. Changing that and adding the better cooler hasn't put me too much over the $800 mark thankfully. :) Thank you for the advice, very much appreciated for this pc building newbie.

Is there a difference between the Brave TOR option and the actual TOR browser? Is there one I should use over the other or is there no difference?

Brave's Tor mode uses Brave's browser engine, Tor Browser uses a modified version of Firefox. TBB's Firefox is specially hardened against fingerprinting and other vulnerabilities, including being compiled without support for things like WebRTC and WebGL2 which are generally massive privacy holes. Tor Browser is specifically designed for Tor and the Tor Project recommends using Tor Browser for Tor. You can probably get away with Brave unless you need the highest level of anonymity possible. Just use whatever you're most comfortable with.

For basically anything short of sending nastygrams to US federal agencies, just use whatever is most convenient for you. The version of Tor Browser in Firefox is more hardened. It's also the 'default Tor Browser', so a target for anyone trying to exploit tor users. If you are only browsing Kiwi Farms, and you aren't a principled political dissident or some other USG target, you probably have nothing to worry about.

This might be a boomer tier question.

I miss VCR/DVD, taking a movie round to watch with a hookup.
Being at the whim of whatever is available on streaming services is nigger tier

I want something I can stick a movie on and just plug it into a hdmi slot on any telly and it works. No need for nerding over settings/wifi/Bluetooth/sudo. Just plug it into a computer at my house and transfer the movie then plug it into the hdmi slot on her telly,
I don't care about streaming or bluetoothing via whatever, just keep it simple.

Does it exist? The words compile or install in the answer means no.

Yes, they have little media boxes like this on Aliexpress. Just put your shit on a USB stick in the correct format, plug it into this box and you're good to go. I have not used this particular one, but these have been around for decades now, and usually work fine enough.

Additionally, you could always just get a cheap DVD player and buy DVDs at the Thrift Store/get the at the library for free. Most libraries have a DVD selection similar to an early 2000s video store nowadays.

You want a shit-tier laptop and a high-capacity USB stick.

You could also do this if you wanted to get extra fancy.

Smooth enough to be perfect.
Turning up with a dvd player and taking the time to set it up however is akin to asking to install uTorrent on her phone and learn morris dancing.

You could also do this if you wanted to get extra fancy.
Why wouldnt you be extra fancy?

something along the lines of "an idiot admires complexity a genius admires simplicity"
It's what I asked for. Specifically avoiding complexity.
Turning up with a dvd player and DVD's is multiple things. Turning up with one thing from the glovebox with the movies already on it is simpler.

I believe you're looking for what we nowadays call 'a laptop'.

I'm building a PC with a Ryzen 5 5500 and a RX 6600 with little to no RGB and a 550w PSU. How much wattage/VA do I need in an uninterruptible power supply? Total wattage usage for my system in ~320W. Is APC still a good brand?
