'No Stupid Questions' (NSQ) Internet & Technology Edition

Ok so a couple months into last semester my Campus's security (fortiguard) blocked Kiwi Farms. I got around that by installing the Ultrasurf extension to Chrome. And it worked out really well for the time. That is until Chrome started acting up at which point I downloaded Brave and installed Ultrasurf on there. After that things went back to normal at least until a couple days ago when Ultrasurf just stopped working. I guess the Campus updated their security (Also a fun fact about my Campus's security system: It doesn't block porn) so now Im looking for an alternative. I'm looking for something free and requires little to no hassle to set up

Your best option is probably using Tor Browser, with the KF onion address. Works at least as good as the regular web address.

Unless you're talking about doing this on college computers, which might not be the best idea. If that's the case, maybe try WindScribe- I think they have a browser extension. Their entire marketing plan is their free offering, so I semi-trust them for low risk stuff like this.

I'm feeling real stupid right now so. Couldn't you use something like protonVPN to get here?

Also, if this is a school computer I'd be cautious about breaking any rules or go into any grey areas with what you access. If your device is imaged with a specific thing, it could have a bunch of internal rules and monitoring you may not know about. Just some food for thought

Nah it’s my personal labtop I’m not the most tech savvy guy but I know better than to do that shit on campus property

Difficult to do nowadays for various reasons, particularly SPF and other anti-spam protections that take authorized mail server addresses for a domain into account.

If it's a free email address, just sign up for something similar. If it's not, just set your 'display name' on a newly created free email account to the email address of the person that you are entirely legally authorised to impersonate and hope the recipient doesn't notice.

What’s the best way to remove information about yourself online? I don’t have a fear of doxxing really because I doubt I do anything to justify it, but it still worries me to have my real life tied to anything online. How would I find information about myself, if it exists, and if so how would I remove it? I’m mostly just looking for peace of mind and am not well versed in this topic even though I’d like to be.

Well, google search, bing search, startpage search and stuff for your name and variations of your name. Also search family members to see what you are potentially tied to with them. Search for old usernames to find anything too. Past that there are tons of Whitepage like sites that have your info and potential ties. These sites have to legally remove you if requested. There are services like DeleteMe (https://joindeleteme.com/ which I have used) which send out mass opt-out emails to all the sites that have your information. If you don't want to pay, there usually are opt-out FAQ's associated with every site. Also, NEVER be a registered voter. Voter registries get you doxxed.

Also, a good thing to do is make sure you know exactly what is out there and that could be tied to you. So past search engines, social media search, access public records (like court records, voter records) to see what could potentially be tied to you. However, you may not be able to remove some info.

You will never be 100% anonymous and you can and will be outed if someone or something really wants to fuck you. Know what is tied to you. If you want to do something nefarious, use a logless VPN like NordVPN for online use. There is also Tor, which I don't really like, but it is a widespread program used a lot. Use burner emails from places like protonmail or tutanota. This will make it super hard to tie you to whatever activity you are doing, but again is not 100%

Does removing your voter registration remove that information too? I registered long before I started getting concerned about this stuff.

Also I appreciate all the tips, I know I’m now going to get 100% anonymous but nothing wrong with striving for it at least.

That is hard to say and probably depends by state (im assuming you're US). The official record would get updated, however older versions without that change may be what is publicly available. Check with your local government and I assume they will be able to help you.

That being said, something like that out there isn't the end of the world. What I do is have a professional online presence and an autistic shitposter presence.

So, what would be the best way to secure your phone from identity theft?
Let's say scenario 1, they only have your phone number.
And in 2 they've stolen the phone itself.

Like protect them from using your number? Because there isn't a way to stop someone from spoofing your number.

And if they have your phone, password protect it at the lock screen.

lol @ having a SIM hold a bunch of personal info that is encrypted but has a backdoor easily used by store personnel.
