That sounds like a jank wifi-chipset and as usual I suspect VIA. If it is drivers issue and he have drivers that work stored locally, then install those manually. 1903 or whatever it was fucked over my PCIe USB card with newer drivers but I had the working cat/inf so it was trivial to replace.

Thing is he's seeing the same issues with other networking devices. I had him try reinstalling the phone tethering USB driver, but that didn't work either (although I don't recall getting a confirmation as to whether he had tested the phone tethering with another laptop/desktop to eliminate that as a confounding issue). So it's rather odd from that point of view.

Honestly, just getting a pirated Win 10 or 8.1 installer off some torrent is probably the best option.

oh wait i can actually answer this. it works fine on both 10 and 8.1, you still have to edit a config file to use a 16:9 resolution and you need to do some shit in your documents folder to enable the based custom billboards feature but otherwise it pretty much just works ootb

even tho 10 is godawful i honestly dont remember having any compatibility issues with it that werent already an issue on 64 bit windows 7

These AIO coolers all have shitty pumps. I’m amazed you managed to get longer than two years out of one. Every Corsair H series, Thermaltake, and NZXT cooler that I have purchased has eaten shit within the first year. My Thermaltake 360 RIING did exactly what you’re describing now, and eventually completely died a few weeks later.

Well, it's not really an AIO, it's this modular thing that Swiftech sells that's between an AIO and custom loop for retards like me too stupid to build the latter. I just have it cooling my CPU though. Regardless, it hasn't given me any trouble since I made that post, so whatever.

Not wanting to derail the spirit of this thread, but that sort of looks awesome. I built a high-end gaming rig with a Thermaltake P5 thinking I would take the time to run a custom loop, and I’ve never been more wrong in my life. I might PM you to ask you about your computer, if you don’t mind.

I run storage spaces on my win10 plex server. I added two new drives, and moved some older 8-12tb from an external usb enclosure into the case with SATA,. Storage spaces shit the bed, saying the 3 drives i moved from the case into the USB enclosure lost connection. Crystaldiskinfo says the drives are fine and two of them show up in disk management outside of the pool as storagepool. But Storage spaces insists they're missing. i've tried a Repair-virtualdisk and retired the three drives and it was working until an hour ago when get-storagejob shows that the repaire was suspended. what is my best option here? Was there a way to reattach the drives to the pool? thought the sata connectors would've been bad, so i replaced those but to no avail. The 3 drives show up as connected by sata when they should be seen as USB.


good news is that the files themselves seem to be ok, in that they exist in the pool, Plex reads the files and works like normal. but windows explorers says "the specified data could not be read from any of the copies" when i click the folder.

is there away to move those files into another folder?

E: if i move the drives back to where they were originally would that solve some of the problem?

Does anybody have recommendations for a GNU/Linux that supports persistence and mounting encrypted partitions(LUKS) as /home as live-usb?
KaliLinux supports this and it works very well, but it's obviously meant for pen-testing, I'm looking more for a general-use distro, if possible based on Ubuntu.
Edit : nvm, I'm dumb. You can just boot from a standard live-usb and install it to another empty usb drive inluding LUKS
You can even integrate a killswitch pw that nukes all the keys without notice

the solution was to buy a few pcie sata cards and run all the hdds off the motherboard. pool figured itself out and i didnt lose any data.

the multidisk hdd enclosure i was using was causing storage spaces to detach the physical disks inside. the singlendisk enclosures were fine.

If portability is not a factor, then get a desktop. Easier to upgrade and a lot easier to replace faulty parts.
Laptops also tend to have shitty cooling with the exception of high-end gaming machines.

If you decide to get a gaming laptop, don't go high-end. "hot and heavy" would describe those very well, especially the hot part. Really, gaming laptops should be thought of as handhelds, they should be lower power with lower power draw and lower heat output. With a laptop you could probably get one with a GTX 1650 for a decent price, going above that and you will have the same complaints as everyone else using gaming laptops.
If you need more power than that, like if you need more CUDA cores for work, then go with a desktop. Maybe add a $400 laptop with an i3-i5 for general use if you need it, it won't get hot enough to sterilize you if used in your lap.

Is there any software that can, in bulk, compress videos down or convert them to H.265 or whatever's the current best compression codec? My Plex server's about to hit the 4TB mark, and the videos my phone records of any significant length are well over a gigabyte each.
