Fuck me I have to vent.
I attended a conference a few months ago. Sandwiches were provided, including two different kinds of cheese sandwiches, and a few sandwiches that had both kinds of cheese. One of my co-workers, a stereotypical they/them woman, said she really wanted to find one of the sandwiches that had both kinds of cheese, but there were only a few and they were already gone and she was upset about it. Another co-worker consoled her by suggesting they share split sandwiches so she could have one half with Cheese A and one half with Cheese B.
I thought, okay, I guess she's really into assorted cheese? I can respect that. But it still seemed weird that she cared so much and I kept thinking about it from time to time. Then I realized. I would bet 100 pounds sterling that she wanted a sandwich with both kinds of cheese so that she could claim it was a NON-BINARY SANDWICH. I'm not joking. In hindsight I really think she wanted her sandwich to be an expression of her gender identity or some fucking horseshit. I didn't sit with her after so I don't know.
Even if that's not the case and she actually just likes cheese (don't know why anyone would really want a mix of that particular two, I don't think they'd go well together), I hate that that dumb thought came into my mind when ten years ago I never would suspected something so stupid. It gave me flashbacks to old-school tumblr when another they/them I knew pondered, in all seriousness, whether toast for breakfast was masculine or feminine, and how that would affect her gender that day.
