Crime “Non-Binary Queer” Artist Arrested After Arranging to Rape A 9-Year-Old Boy, Distributing Child Abuse Material - the predator, whose work appeared in VICE and was praised in Vogue, told the undercover agent that he “loved seeing sexy pedo’s”

A “non-binary queer” artist has been arrested after attempting to meet a 9-year-old child for sex. Efrem Zelony-Mindell, 35, was arrested in Manhattan, New York on December 16.

According to the Department of Justice, Zelony-Mindell had begun communicating with an undercover FBI agent earlier this year after meeting him on Scruff, a hook-up application for homosexual men. During these conversations, Zelony-Mindell slowly eased into asking the agent if he was “into taboo,” and expressed an interest in “yng incest dad son.” He then repeatedly and graphically stated his desire to sexually abuse children, and sent the undercover agent child sexual abuse material.

Approximately one month later, the undercover agent offered to introduce Zelony-Mindell to another agent posing as a father of a 9-year-old boy willing to allow him to rape his son. The predator immediately jumped at the opportunity, and advised the second agent of his desire to sexually abuse the 9-year-old. Arrangements were then made for the two to meet after they had spoken both through an encrypted messaging service, text message, and on the phone.

Zelony-Mindell was arrested after arriving to the location he had agreed upon with the second undercover agent. He waived his Miranda rights and agreed to cooperate with law enforcement, ultimately admitting to possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material, and stating his intention to sexually abuse a child.

Later on that same day, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, and the Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Office of the FBI, Michael J. Driscoll, announced charges against Zelony-Mindell.

According to the FBI deposition on Zelony-Mindell’s charges, the predator told the undercover agent that he “loved seeing sexy pedo’s” while asking for a picture of the other person.

Special Agent for the FBI Aaron Spivack also noted in a federal court on Friday that the Telegram account Zelony-Mindell communicated through utilized a phone number that matched the one on his personal website.

Zelony-Mindell had also sent videos and images of child pornography to the agent after admitting his interest in pedophilia. Within the complaint, graphic descriptions of the materials Zelony-Mindell sent to the first undercover agent were provided.

Among the media, were “a video depicting an adult male raping an approximately 11-year-old boy by penetrating him anally,” and an image of a toddler boy being forced to perform oral sex on an adult male. There was also an image of “an adult male restraining an approximately 12-year-old boy whose penis and anus were exposed.”

Additional disturbing content included multiple images of adult men licking the anuses of boys as young as 8, media of a 10-year-old boy being forced to perform oral sex on an adult male, and images of an adult male “raping a young girl, approximately 8-years-old,” by vaginal penetration.

After being put in contact with the second undercover agent, the one posing as a father to a 9-year-old boy, Zelony-Mindell began distributing child pornography to that agent as well. This included an image of an adult male forcing a young boy to expose his anus and genitals, and a video of “a child under the age of approximately 10 years old being raped by an adult male who is penetrating the child anally.”

When asked where he got this child sexual abuse material, Zelony-Mindell responded that he “used to be in chat rooms,” has “a separate phone for perv atuff [sic],” and has “a shit ton on this phone.”

While communicating with the second agent, Zelony-Mindell stated: “I want to have sex with your son dude. It’s honestly all I think about. You watching us together.” He told the agent he was planning to visit New York, as he had previously moved to Arkansas, and asked, “You really want your kid to take my dick? Cause if we get together I’m absolutely going to fuck him.”

Zelony-Mindell is known for being an artist and activist, and has contributed to VICE in the past.

On his website, Zelony-Mindell describes himself as a “white non-binary queer” person and states his pronouns are “they/them.”

Zelony-Mindell has a history of painting and curating several “queer” art shows as well as being a former writing contributor to VICE.

In 2016, VICE published a piece by Zelony-Mindell in which he gushed about photographer Mary Ellen Mark and her “iconic” photos of a 13-year-old sexually trafficked child named Erin Charles. The girl “became a 30-year focus of turmoil and intrigue” to Mark, and the child “became integral to her artistic practice,” Zelony-Mindell described.

“What starts off as a portrait of a young girl with big dreams progresses over the years into a life that’s fallen apart through drugs, abuse, ten children, and other turmoil. ‘Will they make it?’ asks Tim Wride, one of the curators…, in reference to the subjects Mark captures on film. ‘Probably not. Is that the point? Probably not. At the same time, I think there is an optimistic edge that was so crucial to show with this body of work.’”

On his Instagram, one of Zelony-Mindell’s final posts is of a photograph taken by Jimmy DeSana in 1989 titled “Coat Hanger,” which features two nude young males with exposed bottoms.

On his website, Zelony-Mindell lists over one dozen shows he has curated, including at Ohio University, Texas Tech University, and the International Center for Photography-Bard.

In January, Zelony-Mindell’s book Witness was praised in Vogue in an article which appears to have been hastily deleted following the announcement of his charges. The Vogueprofile praised Witness as “a resource” on the “intricacies of BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ artists.”

Zelony-Mindell was interviewed for the article, at one point signaling to human rights, and the Black Lives Matter movement and the protests and demonstrations that rocked the United States in 2020.

“After the murder of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor there was this collective specter hanging over the United States and the human species, really. A huge part of that violent weight was what role did photography and video play on us as individuals and communities. How do we collectively speak up and speak out?” Zelony-Mindell was quoted as saying. “How do we need to learn to listen and re-educate? How has silence and supremacy laid a pathway for complacency and white solidarity to racism, bigotry, and death?”

The disgraced artist is facing a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life if he is prosecuted for his count of attempted enticement of the fake 9-year-old boy to engage in illegal sexual activity. He faces another minimum of five years and maximum of 20 years in prison for his count of distribution of child pornography, and another maximum of 20 years in prison for his count of possession of child pornography.

It is quite interesting that amonst his child porn was heterosexual porn.

I have never met a gay who wasn’t an open, out-and-proud pervert. They just want an open, unwilling hole.
I'm almost glad I was forced to work closely with a particularly noxious specimen early in adulthood, removed the blinders in a thorough and violent way. This guy was a "bottom" and vocal about said preference, but spent his spare time accosting and groping women (with an obvious preference for a certain voluptuous body type) and playing it off as a "joke" that "had to" be allowed on account of his "flamer" status. Girls inevitably went along with it, though many seemed less than enthusiastic. He also relentlessly sexually harassed straight guys and talked shit about various neighborhood teenage boys. When he eventually went out in a blaze of glory, he left his animal-related materials in view of some coworkers.

There's just something wrong with them. That's all there is to it.

Exposed: Vogue-celebrated 'queer' artist snagged in a child predator sting

By Olivia Murray

In the aftermath of the August 25, 2020 events in Kenosha, which saw a young Kyle Rittenhouse kill two and maim a third, a joke went around, mocking the prevalence of depravity on the left. It went something like this: where can you fire three rounds into a crowd and hit a pedophile, a domestic abuser, and a gun-toting felon? Answer? A BLM riot.
Well, color me surprised (not), when I read the headline below:
"Non-binary queer" artist featured in Vogue for LGBT art arrested for arranging rape of a 9-year-old boy and sharing child porn[.]
He is Efrem Zelony-Mindell (ZM), and he's a darling on the left. Time and again, high-profile media outlets and left-wing journalists have lionized ZM; he's also written for publications like the Huffington Post and Vice. In an interview for Forbes, contributor Adam Lehrer introduced ZM like this:
Edit: That Forbes stopped to age well. :story: And just in case if they want to delete that article. https://archive.vn/49Oz0

Yuck and ugh! This fuck should never walk free again given the nature of his crimes!

He worked with both Vice and Vogue, two of our.... (pseudo) news media organizations... Who could have guessed that once again, the letter people that love talking down to everyone else and accusing others of wrong, were actual sex pest pedo criminal POS!

I know people dunk on the feds a lot, and there are plenty who don’t exactly cover themselves in glory, but I thank the Lord that there are people in law enforcement willing and able to conduct operations like this. What those agents must see and experience must scar them for life. Their work, and the work of everyone who works to catch these animals is so important. It must be an horrific job.

Don't expend too much sympathy.

The evil that drives this behaviour goes far deeper and is much more prevalent than most would be willing to acknowledge.

Look at the Dutroux affair.
Look at The Family murders.
Look at The Finders.

Friends in high-places are what keeps this cancer spreading.

It needs to be CUT out of a society.

I’m glad the Fag Busting Investigators are finding these but the fact that “parent offering a child to ‘teach’” isn’t immediately an instantaneous glowie flag to these pedos means there are enough people actually doing it that it makes me sick

Small update, he pled NOT GUILTY.

A curator arrested last month for attempting to entice a minor to engage in illicit sexual activities pleaded not guilty to the charges Thursday (19 January) in Federal District Court in Manhattan. The curator, Efrem Zelony-Mindell, faces one count of distribution of child pornography, one count of possession of child pornography and one count of attempted enticement of a minor. The charges carry maximum sentences of 20 years in prison each for distribution and possession of child pornography and a maximum sentence of life in prison for enticement of a minor.

A spokesperson for the US District Court for the Southern District of New York tells The Art Newspaper that investigations are ongoing, and that a second conference has been set for 29 March.

Zelony-Mindell, a curator who rose to prominence in the close-knit circles of photography and photobooks and uses the pronoun they and them, was an MFA student at the University of Arkansas when they were arrested in New York on 16 December 2022 in an undercover sting. FBI agents, posing online as a parent of a fictitious nine-year-old boy, had made arrangements to meet up with Zelony-Mindell after the curator allegedly expressed interest in engaging in sexual activity with the boy.

According to the 13-page complaint filed the day of the arrest, Zelony-Mindell waived their Miranda rights and agreed to talk to law enforcement upon arrest. The agent in charge of the investigation wrote that during an interview, Zelony-Mindell “admitted, in sum and substance, to possessing and distributing child pornography. In addition, he stated, in sum and substance, that he intended to meet [an undercover agent] in order to meet [the agent’s] purported 9-year-old child and that the purpose of meeting the child was to engage in sexual conduct.”

A lawyer for Zelony-Mindell did not respond to requests for comment.

Zelony-Mindell first communicated with the undercover agents around 16 February, 2022, on the dating app Scruff, which caters to men seeking men. According to the complaint, Zelony-Mindell asked the investigators’ account whether the user was “into taboo”; the account described an interest in “taboo yng incest dad son”, after which Zelony-Mindell asked to shift conversations to the encrypted messaging app Telegram. Investigators say that Zelony-Mindell stated on Telegram that they had an interest in pedophilia and, between May and July, distributed videos and images containing child pornography to the FBI agents.

In early May, Zelony-Mindell also allegedly began expressing their interest in having sex with a minor. An undercover agent had introduced the fictitious child as the son of a friend, and Zelony-Mindell allegedly began communicating with the purported father, also a law enforcement agent acting undercover. The parties agreed that the child would be on sleep medication during the planned sexual activity so he would be “knocked out a little bit”, the complaint reads. Authorities arrested Zelony-Mindell in December when the curator, who had since moved to Arkansas for school, was visiting New York. The arrest took place outside a coffee shop in Tribeca where law enforcement said they had arranged to meet before heading to the father’s apartment.

News of Zelony-Mindell’s charges has disturbed many in the photography world who knew them as an advocate of emerging artists, and queer artists in particular. Chief among their projects were books they edited—newflesh (2019), Primal Sight (2021) and Witness (2021)—that collectively brought together works by more than 200 artists exploring issues of race and gender, and feature texts by well-known art-world figures.

“They were an up-and-coming queer scholar on track to become one of the most prominent voices,” the photographer Leonard Suryajaya tells The Art Newspaper. “Efrem had a lot of power in the sense that they got to approach artists, take them in, give them attention, validation…When you’re a young artist with nothing on your resume and this figure comes up and says, ‘I want to publish your work,’ that could mean the world.”

Suryajaya never met Zelony-Mindell in person, but they maintained a professional relationship over the past five years primarily through social media. The two worked together on several projects, including a feature in Foam Magazine for which Zelony-Mindell provided an essay about Suryajaya’s work. News of Zelony-Mindell’s charges “feels very triggering because I had the utmost trust for Efrem,” Suryajaya says. “Knowing that we were both queer, we understand what it feels like to be a persecuted minority, we know the struggle of the photo industry, we know how you have to lean on each other to build your career—only to find out that our foundation and values are so disconnected.

“It shook me to the core. It really pulled from my trust,” he adds. “The network I’ve built is all because of the internet, based on digital bridges. It really made me question everything in my world.”

Beyond photobooks, Zelony-Mindell made a name for themself writing for publications including DEAR DAVE, MOSSLESS and VICE; organising exhibitions at venues including the 2018 Re: Art Show and the 2020 Spring Break Art Show; and co-hosting an interview series with artists that was live-streamed on Twitch. From 2018, they also served on the board of the Robert Giard Foundation, which closed its doors at the end of 2022. Many artists knew Zelony-Mindell from the School of Visual Arts in New York, where Zelony-Mindell received their BFA in 2011 and was a teaching assistant.

Since Zelony-Mindell’s arrest, publishers and publications have swiftly removed mention of their projects and contributions from websites. (The blog Filthy Dreams chose to append a note to a review Zelony-Mindell wrote in 2018: “What are we supposed to do?! Pretend this never happened?! Delete all the articles? That felt cowardly and not exposing how he was able to embed himself into the arts community.”) Dozens of people familiar with them have been using a Reddit forum to process the news, with several expressing feelings of betrayal and manipulation.

“After all of this has come out it’s obvious to me how much of their career was based on power over younger marginalised artists, things I saw as creating opportunities now read as manipulation and control tactics,” one Reddit user, identifying as a former classmate of Zelony-Mindell, wrote on 19 December. “I don’t know what else to say other than that I feel haunted by this, it’s hard to put out of my mind.”

While relatively unknown to the broader public, Zelony-Mindell became a trending topic overnight in far-right circles as news of their arrest spread. Conservative media and personalities were quick to zero in on the curator’s identity as nonbinary and queer, in their excoriations about predators perpetuating transphobic and homophobic stereotypes.

The onslaught of sensationalist commentary demonstrates how Zelony-Mindell has “sparked this undoing of what queer achievements have been made in the past few years,” Suryajaya says. “For me, the purpose of being an outspoken, proud queer artist is so I can create a world where people look at me as equal, not a villain or a criminal, like in my home country [of Indonesia]. The case makes people who are already untrustworthy toward queer communities just jump on and persecute queer people.”

Here's another tiny mention of Zelony-Mindell to get saved forever:

I'd like to give them credit for that but a glance at the blog is less seeing red flags and more a sea of crimson with the people they are talking about.
