I remember watching the GTA V roleplaying server NoPixel explode in popularity around the beginning of 2019. I didn't think much of it - other than that it was harmless, if mindless fun.
However, being the good little troll that I am, I revisited Twitch this month and rummaged through many different channels seeking out "conversations" with coked-out e-thots panhandling to sweaty teenagers and deviant step-fathers. Eventually, I became bored of that, so I returned to NoPixel to see how things had progressed. In short, everyone despised each other.
During one of my hot chat sessions, I absentmindedly asked if the GTA roleplay streamer had ever been harassed. He equivocally replied that it happened on the server, before then stating that another GTA roleplay streamer had called him a "pussy" and threatened him publicly. Afterwards the offending streamer was banned. Wait - what? This set off my sharply honed idiot sensors (I like laughing at retards on the internet as much as anyone else) and I investigated some more.
When I broached the topic of harassment between GTA streamers with some of the larger GTA streamers (1000+ viewers) I was greeted by the slavish devotion and Weinsteinesque hush of the moderators. Before invariably being banned, I was given various replies by these internet janitors on the same few themes: about bullying it was uncommon, the viewers were at fault, it didn't happen, you shouldn't talk about it, not the place, etc. At the same time as this braying, I was being told about the sniping and bitching between streamers by those with fewer subscribers (100-200 viewers) so I knew I'd hit a sore spot, if not a vein.
I've heard many rumors since then about the behind scenes interactions of NoPixel and other GTA roleplay streamers including doxxing, threats and black-listing - to name a few. Make no mistake, GTA roleplay generates $1000 of dollars for these streamers and Twitch and is immensely popular. The streamers treat Twitch as a zero-sum game. Consequently, I am convinced there is a lot more meat on this spastic bone - or maybe even a real story. Unfortunately, I am too busy (lazy) to delve deeper.
Could someone expand or inquire into this? Cheers.
