yay ... i have a few coin collections! i posted in the precious metals thread about my fondness for silver, but i also collect centennial american coins, as well as world coins from the year of my birth.

i have an incomplete set of vf/xf 1876 american coins (which includes a one cent, a three cents, a five cents, a dime, a quarter dollar, a half dollar, and a trade dollar). i'm still searching for a twenty cents piece of decent grade, but they were only minted for three years, so most are either damaged beyond recognition, or they're slabbed and ridiculously expensive. i don't purchase slabbed coins. i want to be able to hold that little bit of history.

the birth year collection includes over 200 coins, from over 80 different countries, many of which no longer exist (because i'm old, lol). it's interesting to look them up and learn about their history. many of these are also food and agriculture organization (FAO) coins, which were part a medals and money program (MMP) that was initiated by the united nations.

i also have a set of 1921/2021 morgan dollars and a set of 1921/2021 peace dollars. last year, the u.s. mint released commemoratives for the 100th anniversary of the last minting of the the morgan silver dollar, and for the first minting of the peace silver dollar. the morgan was only minted in philadelphia at the time, and it had an eagle with wings spread, while the peace was minted in philadelphia, new orleans, denver, carson city, and san fransisco. the eagle on the peace has folded wings, as a result of the end of the world war. the 1921 coins were only 0.900 silver and weighed 26.73g, while the 2021 pieces are 0.999 pure silver and weigh 26.69g. interestingly, as the new orleans and carson city mints no longer exist, the 2021 peace dollars were struck with privy marks, 'O' and 'CC', respectively, rather than carrying true mint marks.

how much do you think they are for each silver dollar?

the links in my previous post have more specific information. the 1921 morgan is fairly cheap, i think i paid $10 above spot at the time (so about $35) for an AU coin. the 1921 peace is much more rare, though, because they only minted it toward the end of the year to replace the morgan. it is one of the most expensive silver coins that i own. i think i paid ten times spot for that one, in XF condition. it didn't help that i waited until the year before the commemoratives were released.

the u.s. mint released the 2021 coins for something like $80. however, they were a limited issue, and the u.s. mint does not sell directly to the public, only to approved dealers, so the price almost doubled when they came to market. because the morgan had five privy marks, thus five issues, and the peace only had one, the morgans are easier to find, but i think i paid about $100 for each, which includes a BU condition coin in the original packaging with a certificate of authenticity.

I like the retarded Yap islander custom of having coins so big that you can't even move them and instead have to trade them on paper so it's just as bullshit as an NFT.

I also like the Oriental custom of having holes in your coins so you can stick them on a keychain/necklace. I wish we carried our currency in that form, paper money is gay and boring.

i've completed my 2022 silver bullion coin collection, with one exception. australia was issuing a "beneath southern skies" series that began in 2020. they're attractive coins, considering that they come from the australian royal mint, which tends to produce less dramatic coins than the perth mint. it's an image of the southern cross above the australian continent, but every year, they were going to feature a small image of a different native animal over the capital. since they still hadn't released this year's coin, i emailed the mint. they responded to tell me that the series was no longer being issued. damnit.

instead, in 2022, the royal mint began issuing a "wildflowers of australia" series. so, now i also have the first of this series, which is, hopefully, the last silver bullion coin to be minted with an image of elizabeth the second.

I've never fully appreciated the appeal, but at least it's more understandable to me than philately.

i have it! i finally have a complete set of centennial american coins!
this twenty cents piece is the most expensive coin that i've ever purchased.

A previous numismatics thread was set up, but now it's dead, which sucks. Coin collecting or numismatics is collecting PM (precious metals) coins or historicals for their value, history, art, or whatever facet the coin(s) may pertain. From their inception hitherto now, coins can be described, discussed, or expressed from wherever. These coins are not crypto at all; they are tangible. Whether your coins are graded, slabbed, or gratified doesn't matter. They need to be apposite to the post at hand.

Oh yeah, it would be great if you found any fake coins on eBay or wherever else they may pop up. I don't want other farmers to be beguiled by these fakes and spend all of their cold and fiat currency on imitations from Serbia or Afghanistan.

Once I get my hands on it out of the lake, I may have a cool set of Prussian gold pieces to show. THANK GOD.

Numista is good for cataloging a collection and arranging swaps with other users so I would recommend it. Haven't worked on my collection in forever but I should so I can list the duplicates on ebay.

it is a underrated gem fr fr

As I mentioned in other threads I have a 1£ Gold Sovereign coin from Queen Victoria which is hella naise. I also own a bunch of Brazilian coins from the many currencies we went through, though my favourite ones are the 10 and 20 Réis coins from the Empire which are 10 and 20 grams of silver, respectively.

What do you think is the best way to sort your collection in an album? Which takes precedence? Country, face value, collector value, year, personal affection? And also which side should be displayed, obverse or reverse?

I do it in this order, countries A-Z, small to large. I don't have a lot of my coins in albums but the ones that are are displayed with obverse facing forward. It can be a pain finding the right size capsule sometimes, the best cure for that is to buy capsules that come with multiple different sizes of gaskets inside.
