I think sometimes we forget that this isn't just a thing of the past. Women in certain religious communities, even in the first world, are still living like this. Without powerleveling too much, I have the privilege of knowing some exceptionally intelligent, spirited women who were married as teens (14 at the youngest) to men over 20, and had 5+ kids. Child marriage is legal in some US states with parental consent, and it's not restricted to teens marrying teens. Of course, all of these women are completely financially dependent on their husbands (who are not always gainfully employed themselves). Some have no degree and dropped out of school to get married, so even if they wanted to leave, it would take years to become independent and financially stable. The right to work and get an education are the foundation of our independence, but they aren't a guarantee.
