I’m a prison abolitionist, but that doesn’t mean I’m soft on crime. I just think it’s a waste of money to lock criminals up so they can join gangs and do more crime after they get out. I’d rather we rehabilitate those who can be salvaged. That could be soft things like therapy or work training, or harder things like castrating paedos and rapists, or forced labour for violent offenders. And if they prove beyond redemption, put them down. I’m simply opposed to the idea of giving reprobates free room and board that the good citizen is forced to pay for.

Kind of another non sequitur but re: prevalence of rape and men’s attitudes toward their own crimes, I think it is The Body Keeps the Score that includes some description early on of the male author working with male veterans with PTSD. One of the things often reported in their nightmares and flashbacks was the distress over fact that they brutalized women in the villages they conquered (…and then came back home to their wives). If any of that remorse was sincere (I actually can believe some of it was), that is all the more evidence that males need to be sequestered for the greater good. If even seemingly “normal”, empathetic males, ones capable of remorse for their actions, could still so easily devolve into raping and pillaging, then the ones with no such reservations are absolutely not worth the effort of rehabilitation. In a just society, males would be made to fully reckon with their violence, and in particular the extent of their sexual violence. Neither women nor men can generally stomach just how prevalent sexual violence really is without it destroying some part of their soul. I don’t think my view of males would be so hopeless if even half of them had any self-control and tried to reign the chimps amongst them in. But they don’t, and they don’t.

The thing people who think the bear (and tbf I at least assumed a black bear) is a stupid answer to the “night in the woods” question don’t get is proportionality, but I agree it’s an excellent point that women being “punished for picking wrong” is also such a predictable moid response. I would pick man if it were a grizzly bear/most moms with cubs, as the chance of certain death skyrockets in that case, but most bears are far likelier to not give a shit about me versus a moid with no legal or social consequences to his actions.

That's probably an overstatement. It's become common lore about Michelangelo in particular, because some of his women look very masculine, (ha, these could be Kevin Gibes' breasts (if he had muscle tone)):

This (roids or not) is VERY common. I'm not going to quantify what I mean by "very," or say much more about it, but I'll also add that feeling bad enough about it to remember 2 hours later or do something as pathetically inadequate as taking her out to dinner to make up for it is the opposite of very common.
