Depended on the country, in some parts of Austria-Hungary (in what is known as Slovakia now in particular) often only one man of the settlement (a very small village of several farmhouses) was allowed to marry (in a somewhat arranged or approved way, yes), all the other people had to work for him & and his wife on the family land that was not to be divided. Or go to work on someone else's farm, but there wasn't anywhere much else to go, the land was overpopulated anyway because people don't need legal papers and catholic church to procreate.
This way of life was mostly abandoned in the industrial revolution and then in communism entirely.
