Maybe you should be asking why so many people in your life are apparently so incompetent that they can't be trusted to to wipe their own ass. Pretty much everyone I personally know, men and women, can look after themselves and their children.

This is something that I think genuinely depends on your community. Who was the man raised by, what do his friends and brothers and coworkers do? The men in my life are very serious about providing for their families financially, protecting their families from harm, participating in their kids' lives. But they still demonstrate many of the ignorance and ineptitude laid out in this thread. It's not as simple as something like "you just know shitty people." Either being a bumbling fool at the grocery store is genetically ingrained into men or there is something in our culture and how we raise men up that instills this in them.

Men have lower social intelligence and are less socially observant, so I don't necessarily fault them for shitty birthday gifts. But remembering the actual birthday should be a given. Remembering basic facts about your loved one should be a given. My father was genuinely shocked and hurt every single time he invited a vegetarian relative over for BBQ and the guy didn't want to try my dad's brisket or eat his bacon bits-infused beans.

Did you get all your info about humans, human relationships and gender dynamics from shitty sitcoms? Grown ups don't need a 24/7 baby sitter to take care of them. What you are describing here isn't a healthy romantic relationship but rather a carer and their mentally challenged charge.
