It's the mindset of somehow seeing something there that others don't. Like The Emperors New Clothes but for artistic value. EDIT: Anyway, to contribute a bit more. My mother runs a charity for abused women in the UK, and was telling me about a court case recently where the dude got away with blatantly killing his wife. The dude clearly strangled his wife with her bathrobe belt, the wounds on his arms were clearly defensive. But because he clammed up, kept everything short, and said 'I don't know' to nearly every question, you cannot prove it was him; since he already admitted to physically assaulting her, which explains why he has scratches all up his arms.
