Some men I see have this weird complex where they want women to look like models all the time, but also not be too interested in makeup, clothes, wellness, etc. otherwise you’re considered vain. The Instathots some of these men jerk it to have no idea how much effort goes into the “effortless” look. Just some examples:

• Tanning, whether at a tanning salon or a fake tan
• Professionally done haircuts and dye jobs
• Expensive manicures and pedicures
• Getting brows regularly done
• Expensive skincare routines
• Investing in expensive makeup and knowing how to use it
• Extra money on higher quality clothes and possible tailoring
• Regular spa treatments to maintain decent skin
• More expensive diets due to eating lots of fresh produce/meat to maintain physique
• Home gyms, gym memberships, and/or personal trainers
• Hair styling tools and products for home use
• Possible plastic surgery to minimize wrinkles/change nose/have bigger boobs

They call these women vain, but also see them as the ideal. Not all women can afford or want to do all these things listed, but many women do some things I listed. Not even necessarily for men in all cases, but nonetheless, these types of men encourage this. Most women don’t naturally look like models, it’s very much something you have to put work into.

Their ideal is that women should be effortlessly pretty, but also not the sort of self-involved women who would actually get their nails done or hair colored.

As it applies to politics and public figures, I call it the Palin-Clinton continuum. A female politician can't be too feminine, like Palin was, or the discourse turns to what she's wearing instead of the policies she espouses. If she's dressed too mannish, like Clinton, then she's a lesbo feminazi and a frigid bitch, and the discourse again veers from policy to treating women as objects. You want to hit that goldilocks zone in the middle, but it's vanishingly thin, so men will dismiss you pretty much out of hand because you are either wearing too much or not enough makeup.

ETA: I also want to comment on the convenience that male suiting is very much variations on an extremely set theme (shirt, matching jacket and pants, tie, watch, shoes, belt. optional: ring, cufflink, tie/lapel pin) compared to women's clothing. Women's clothing choices are diverse, difficult to summarize, and context- and culture- dependent. If an outfit isn't working... well, you know it when you see it, and I can't give you much more guidance beyond that.

Back in my old ghetto, this meant women were responsible for telling other women if their clothes are modest or not. (If you're wondering how this looks in practice; the rebbe's wife brings you a shawl she keeps stashed for this very situation and says: 'you must be cold, my dear. why don't you put this on?')

But because the rules of women's fashion are so subjective, the possibility for comment is endless, whereas the discussion of male politician's clothes, is. Eating a lighter dinner of grilled salmon and roasted asparagus because you had a heavier meal earlier in the day isn’t “being womanly,” it’s caring about your body. Wanted to comment on this whole "society makes men develop eating disorders"
Girls usually start developing eds when they wanna get noticed by guys (then they grow up and it turns into the opposite - to seem less attractive or/and they use it as a coping mechanism).
Men on the other hand ??? to look more alpha ig? No one tells them they must look muscular. And it seems pointless for them to change their body (unless they're obese) for a crush like a girl does because (from what I've seen) women either like skinny or normal/chubby guys, they don't really care what they look like.
