I highly recommend the book "The Once and Future Sex" by Eleanor Janega. It talks about medieval beauty standards (equally ridiculous back then as they are in current year), and how Christian theology condemned the use of cosmetics/depilation, but medieval women still used them in secret, because if they failed to meet the beauty standard they could end up losing what little status they had.
Medieval Jewish & Christian scrotes literally believed that women wore makeup for the purposes of "seduction and bringing about the Apocalypse", see: Jezebel and the whore of Babylon. Pride is a deadly sin. A woman being too concerned with her mortal appearance means that she's not paying enough attention to her soul & religious duties. Vanity = telling god that you could do a better job than he could.
If you were an aristocratic medieval woman, you had to dress in fashionable clothing to maintain your status (after all, you're just an ornament), but if you made the sinful mistake of wearing overly embellished designs & bright colors, you go straight to hell. On the other hand, if you're a lower class woman, "sumptuary laws" prevented you from purchasing clothing made of velvet or silk, or fine furs, or certain colors like green and purple... because we can't have poor women being mistaken for nobility now can we?!
Basically, as a woman you were condemned from taking any interest in your appearance, whether it was fashion or cosmetics or hair removal. Wealthy women might be able to live up to the beauty standard (because they could afford the high quality stuff and keep it undercover), but common women were definitely discouraged via religion/laws.
The beauty standards have changed since medieval times, but the attitudes are essentially the same. If you get plastic surgery / follow the 20-step skincare routine / apply that snapchat filter, you're vain and you're deceiving the poor menfolk who have no choice but to gaze at you! How could they have known you don't actually look like that??!! That time you spent learning that cool makeup trick could've been spent reading the bible sucking your bf's dick! (but also if you're not conventionally beautiful, you're worthless... and damn you for trying to improve your station in life you common whore).
Tl;dr men have always been dumb, angry and insecure no matter what we do.
