My parents are from that era where it wasn't so unusual for a man to know a woman as a child, and then date her when she got a bit older (15 or 16), with the guy being around 20 years old. While this isn't a huge gap in terms of years, at that stage in your life it's a huge gap in maturity and life experience. I've tried to explain to them that this is creepy and borderline grooming, that the reason wives of this age were desirable was because they were easily manipulated and controlled. Even if this wasn't a conscious, malicious decision. They're resistant to the idea, understandably, because it would mean recognizing their parents or grandparents, friends and other relatives, were being creepy.

I think it’s largely because, whether they’re aware or not, it makes them feel powerful. Lots of the men I’ve seen online praising the virtues of the teens they aren’t dating but desperately want to say they’re happy, bubbly, and excited by everything, not like those ugly washed up hags in their 30s.
What this says to me is that unimpressive men need to date kids to feel impressive, because women their own age will tell them, maybe not in so many words, that they’re unimpressive.
Since Western men have largely lost much of the absolute power they had over women in society for the last 5,000 years, they think they can regain that feeling of power by being some teenage girl’s omniscient daddy-husband. We no longer need to marry a man for a shot at financial security and social approval, so many of us are refusing to date guys who bring nothing to the table (I hope), and they hate that. Solution? Some of them say it’s just about looks, but that doesn’t make sense to me unless they’re actual pedos who prefer childish features.
