Would also add to that product recalls and evolving safety standards for baby furniture. My generation had the drop-side crib and the Rock’n’play, both of which are banned now (for injuring and killing babies) but you still sometimes see them on the secondhand market.

Some stuff like socks , diarpers and formulas are costly even though in Norway are subsidied and not taxed .

Preach it, formula for a week is $50 for us and diapers are about $35 per week from Costco. If I’m lucky I can score these things on clearance sales, but there’s no counting on that. I figure one of the reasons formula is expensive is that it’s made to pharmaceutical grade standard, a cut above normal food safety procedures. (And nobody really wants to take a gamble on low-cost formula if they can help it. In China all but the cheapest formulas are imported from NZ and AU.)

But you can just have your wife sew all the babyclothes herself from curtains she steals at people's houses and wash and dry reusable diapers every day! You can also breastfeed your kids until they are 8 to save on food! There's so many tricks and tips! It's just women's laziness that makes children expensive!

Breastfeeding never really worked for me, I couldn’t establish a good supply and pumping is very time consuming. I feel bad about saying this because Mom Propaganda preaches that breast milk makes your kids invulnerable Ubermenschen, but idk if I would want to try that again.

Babies are cheap in terms of what keeps them alive. But that’s not what’s expensive. They’re not cheap in terms of lost income opportunities, time off work and childcare.

Preach it. I scaled back to part-time (25 hours/wk) and got a job closer to home for this exact reason. And I’m lucky, on this regard.

Daycare isn’t calculated in costs because you should be a stay at home mom, of course!!

Tbh in my town there’s a long waitlist just to get into daycare. The supply of spots isn’t anywhere close to demand in number of kids, and some women are looking at 70% or more of their daily pay going straight to childcare.

At times, it feels like a funnel meant to corral women back out of the workforce. If I was handing over most of my pay for the privilege of putting a baby in day care so I could work… I wouldn’t want to do that, but then how do you reintegrate to a job once the kids are school age?

It doesn’t help that many employers treat their workers having babies as being equivalent to their workers getting a useless, expensive pet, like a cockatoo they’re required to schedule on the company health plan. How is it any surprise that women are having fewer babies when the math shakes out like this?

One thing about men that I've met and are present in my family is that they usually have issues understanding how destructive their shows of anger are, especially when they are around women. So I'm currently working on my master's and cannot afford to work full time, therefore I unfortunately am bound to my family home for the near future. Few days ago parents bought a bag of frozen onion rings, the bigger 60 piece one. So of course mom made half of that, she and I took nine pieces each, left the rest to my King Shit of Fuck Mountain dad. He complained that he didn't have enough, that he wanted at least 20 onion rings next time. Yesterday, she made the rest of the bag, we each took 5 pieces, and left the rest to him. When he sat down, he started asking why he had all of the rings and we had nothing, as if, once again, we had done something wrong. I'm trying to eat less and healthier so I already didn't want more, but the fact that he asked this despite complaining about it for a solid minute last time annoyed me. So I said "Well you wanted 20 onion rings so we took less, otherwise you complain." Literally that's it. He got so angry that he tried to pile onion rings on my plate with his greasy shit hands, then when I rejected them he threw them to where I was sitting and also on the wall and told me to go fuck myself if I wasn't going to eat those. Both of them left and I just had my dinner by myself. I'm completely aware of the fact what I said wasn't nice, but if this is going to annoy him to this point, why did he complain about it so much last time? He made it sound like mom had done only half of the bag to keep him hungry? Do men think that shit like this doesn't make you look strange? Why are you complaining about something so much and then acting like we're starving ourselves when we're just trying to accommodate you? Do they think their words and attitude don't grate on people, that they can just say whatever the fuck they want, forget about it, then just say whatever they want again? As a result she had to take some days off work on short notice, and some tasks were completed late.
