I remember back, almost a year ago now, I sat at my dining room table with three hospice workers from the home health care agency. It was our first meeting and we were setting things up for Riley to be treated as a hospice patient rather than just a stubborn old drunk. I had to sign a paper stating that I understood that no measures would be taken to keep Riley alive. For me, I felt I was signing his death warrant. I hovered over the place where the signature was to be, but had difficulty actually putting the pen to paper.
The hospice worker was very patient. She asked me what was holding me back. We talked about my feelings of failure because I had not been able to get Riley to desire a better life. I told her of my need to see things through to the end. And I told her how tired I was in general.

On a similar note, men (and women, but especially men) feel incredibly bold when dealing with female customer facing jobs, like retail, waitressing, customer service etc. They will say the nastiest shit, be incredibly rude, lose their shit if you react in the specific way they want you to, or say the thing they want or smile like they want. They hate “modern women” because they won’t settle for below bare minimum men out of necessity. It’s why they’re so desperate for women to lower their standards. And I think this is another reason why so many people aren't having kids. They're afraid of things like this.

Ideally, if you have kids, you'd never say you'd be just as happy if you never had them. Unfortunately, that's not how things work, and like it, or not, kids do know when their parents would be just as happy, or even more so without them, and this does hurt them. It really does, and I think that's something at least a few would-be parents remember experiencing themselves as children, and the fear of possibly passing that down onto their own is yet another reason they choose not to have any.

But statistically, children do not make you happier. I think we sell women false promises when you hear how it’s the most complete love on earth and all the sacrifices are worth it. Reality is often messier than that and comes with a lot of complicated feelings.

But again, as much as we love to romanticize parenthood, it does not make you happier. That doesn’t mean we don’t love our kids, but it does mean if I took a snippet of my life from before and measured my overall happiness, I was happier a lot more before I had kids than after. Having babies is also when most relationships take a nosedive, and those happiness levels don’t go back to what they were until after the kids are grown and moved out.

It’s difficult to talk about because even when you make good faith efforts, there’s always someone there trying to make you feel like a bad person for being honest. You can love your kid but hate what they do to your life, both things can coexist at the same time, and often do. This is why more and more women are simply opting out.

edit: this also assumes you’re lucky enough to have a normal child. If your kid has developmental or behavioral problems you’re pretty much guaranteed to have your life ruined. I know we’re not supposed to say that quiet part out loud, but the type of child the universe gives you mostly determines how difficult the next (at least) 18 years will be for you.
