That reminds me of two cases that happened here in the UK where children died due to parental neglect. Though, in one of those cases, it was more foolishness than actual neglect.

In one case, a woman left her young children in her car while she popped into the shops to charge her electric key (might have been gas, I forget which now) because it was cold and she thought they would be warmer in her car. While she was in the queue, the handbrake failed and her car rolled into a ditch. Unfortunately, her children drowned. She had to go into hiding while waiting for the trial and she got a hefty prison sentence. She got a lot of hate from people.

In the second case, a father left his child strapped inside his car on a boiling hot day while he was flirting with another woman for hours. The child perished due to the heat. The child's mother was a dental nurse who was at work at the time. The father got a lenient prison sentence. There were people actually defending him. What pissed me off the most was the people who kept saying he was an "excellent Dad" and a "nice lad" who was always out and about with his mates in town. Apparently, constantly going out on the piss with your mates and chatting up women while your kid is strapped inside a hot car is "excellent parenting." Even worse, some people blamed the mother for working.
