I can elaborate on this further, although it may not be appropriate for this sort of the thread, so I'm gonna try to keep it as short as possible.

The reality is that patriarchy, in a Foucauldian "Regime of Truth" kind of sense (knowledge and truth produced by power structures, not achieved through empiricism and rationality), for as much power that it brings to men, it also dehumanizes them. This dehumanization process creates a perpetual sense of longing for validation, desire to prove oneself, which makes them much easier to control and allows society to use them as tools to maintain pre-existing power structures. It creates a population pool of dependable army conscripts, that are happily willing to die as meat shields, just to prove how manly they are, to prove that their existence matters. Just take a look at this Russian army recruitment ad.

Of course, as others within this thread have rightfully pointed out, resisting and calling out this toxic mentality is a choice. But it is a choice with consequences. In the west (although it has gotten much better), if a man tries to call out toxic masculinity, he gets labelled a simp, a cuck, feminine and several other adjectives that denotes them as weak. Although it's still not nearly as bad compared to places with much more deeply imbedded patriarchal culture like Russia, where being a political activist opposed to such toxic regime of truth on masculinity can straight up get you arrested, beaten and tortured by cops, before you're sent to prison where you get further beaten and tortured by your inmates for being seen as a weak man.

This is all barely touching the surface still. If you want to see the patriarchy at it's worst, a manipulative cult of self-abasement and death, learn about boot camps and how new recruits are trained there, or how gangs and mafias recruit their henchmen. All the pretext of good masculine virtue like being the provider or force of stability is almost completely abandoned. You're definitely not taught how to parent or empathize there. I apologized and said I didn’t realize she expected me to pay. She said that it’s fine, and she didn’t actually need me to pay because she makes good money, it’s just the principal. She then reminded me again that every other date she’s been on the guy has offered to pay.

I was so embarrassed, and felt really cheap. She tried to reassure me and said she’s fine just being friends, and we can even hang out next week still and both just pay for ourselves. She said she had a good time and would still like to be friends and hang out in the future.

We’ve been playing league and stuff but I can tell her interest in me romantically has completely dissipated. I’ve really been beating myself up since then. I was lucky to even get the date. I really don't understand why he said this, because women have been working as long as he has been alive most likely. Regardless, none of that matters, because if you like someone, you ensure there are no questions about your intent, so you pay as much and as often as you can, and ensure a second date. Yes, later on the woman will step up and offer to pay for herself more often most likely.

My uncle was too young to help (which was bullshit, he was only a few years younger, he could have helped clean), and her older sister refused to do anything. She was left to be the maid and accepted it as her duty.

This same man was almost a family annihilator because said older sister got pregnant out of wedlock, and my mother had to talk him down to stop him from wiping out the entire family. She said this with a steady voice and a straight face, while inwardly I went, 'What the absolute fuck?' This same man was one of those Greatest Generation who raised Boomers to be robots, and yes, while he had a rough childhood, that is never a reason to make your children afraid of you. If his children made mistakes, they were not allowed to explain why - he punished them. He expected good grades and better behaviour.

This same man also refused to believe my mother when she told him she saved a girl from drowning in a shallow river and was then accused, by him, of trying to drown her. He did not want to hear her side of the story, said, 'Don't you snowball me' and whipped her with his belt so severely she could barely walk the next day. When she told me the full extent of that story, she cried. In all other instances she didn't. She later forgave him not just for that, but for the near family annihilation. It's shit I could never forgive and is borderline insane.

My aunt, by contrast, never forgave him and I always wondered what happened between them and why she acted as she did. She later spiraled into depression and, like I said earlier, lost his shit at her for miscarrying a child she actually wanted, near full term. There was no pity, no understanding. He was just going to fucking kill her.

It's said you are never supposed to trash or insult your ancestors, but when she told me that I was floored.
