Hubbard's writing can be decent. The second half of Battlefield Earth was really good, and The Automagic Horse, The Planet Makers, A Matter of Matter The Invaders, A Very Strange Trip, and 240000 Miles Straight Up were all quite fun. I also like Edgar Winter's Mission Earth album (ev&oe the books are doodoo).

Part of the appeal of lolcows and their related communities is the thrill of discovery. Look at the threads for Movieblob, Fatrick, or any given troon, and you can see the energy driving the discussion is that each new fucked up revelation leads to more fucked up revelations. Scientology and it's horrific practices are too well known, and (deserved) criticism of it too mainstream. You can badmouth it on most of reddit without risk of a janny swooping in to clean it up.
