Old Console Upgrades - How to accidentally, your console.

Nigger is its retro just get an FPGA, dont go around fucking with electronics you dont understand and fuck up a classic console that is now worth real money because the vast majority got turned into ewaste by retards

The other shit like the termal paste its just basic maintenance, dont be like that nigger that let his ps2 become a roach house

As long as this thread is bumped, how do you guys feel about modding old portables with IPS screens? I did an IPS/USB C Rechargeable Battery mod on an original horizontal GBA just as a quality of life improvement. The wife has her original GBA SP with the frontlit screen and besides the better screen on my Gameboy, we were unable to detect any difference in terms of lag or performance.
I'd love to as a project, but never got around to it. The GBA's a neat system, but I just wish it had X and Y buttons. Still, if they were sold as a cheap little kit, I have an old first-gen GBA I could do that with. Then I'd need to get an Everdrive.

My favorite handheld's the PSVita. Softmod it and get one of those game slot MicroSD card readers and you've got one hell of a system. What would make it perfect is a USB-C charging port mod, though I don't know if one exists.

Any advice on an Xbox 360? Specifically the Slim model (4gb)?
Several years ago, I bought a 20gb HDD for the original model of 360 from Game Penis, removed it from its shell, and installed it in my 4gb 360, with some cardboard wedged in there to keep it in place. Worked perfectly, let me play original Xbox games, and was like $3. So there's a cheap and easy upgrade.

That always sounded like a pretty fun project, and the parts are very readily available it seems. I've watched a guy take gameboys apart and it doesn't seem too complicated inside.

Plus with the added benefit of newer rechargeable batteries you only need to buy a box of 4 eneloops and you always have 2 ready to go.

I'm unfamiliar with 360s as I did not own one, but I think as long as it's in working order it should be fine maybe give it a good cleaning and replace thermal paste, I haven't really heard issues with the slim models beyond them scratching discs to hell if they get bumped slightly, but you can run discs off HDD negating needing the disc drive and that's really the only issues that needed to be resolved with older consoles or the PS3 since they aren't as easy.

Not really what I was thinking of, doubly so since I have a Slim model, not an original model.

Yeah, I have the 250gb internal HDD for mine, and I already have most of my discs (of which there are a Metric Fuck Ton) installed to it. How would I replace the thermal paste? I've never done that for any of my machines, and my 360's from 2012 (it was actually a Christmas present), so it's probably overdue.

I might get the 500GB internal HDD just for the hell of it.

The point is that you can use original model hard drives in slim models by taking them out of their shells that were designed only to fit in original models.

I don't really know of anything exciting you can really do with an old 360. I remember thinking piracy on 360 just sounded like a total nightmare, with how difficult J-tagging it looked like. I never heard about any kind of softmodding, either, other than some crazy deal where you can mod your disc drive's firmware to play DVD-R DL backups.

I only really see like 10 games worth playing on the list that weren't ported. That's not to say there aren't good multi platform games however I just think the PS3 had some better exclusives and remasters that are worth keeping on the hard drive.

You're forgetting every Gears of War except the first one, but otherwise, you're right.

Also, seeing Chromehounds there...it really hits me in the feels. FromSoftware couldn't be bothered to make a sequel to that kickass game, or even port it to PC, but they'll make a dozen more clones of Demon's Souls to satisfy pRedditors and #MLGREELG@M3RZ. All of which are the same broken, janky-ass bullshit in a generic-ass fantasy world.

I IPS modded my old GBA and it's been great. I have an SP, but vastly prefer the form factor of the original.

The only other mod I've done on my old consoles is installing a mod chip on my PS1 to use with a PSIO. My soldering skills are pretty basic, but it wasn't as hard as I feared it was going to be.

100% agree with this, the GBA had the best layout although I understand why the SP was the way it was and it does fit into a pocket nicely, but it can't compete with a backlit GBA with modern NiMH batteries.

You have no idea how starved I am for any good mech game, it seems like they all died once the year 2010 hit, the Mechwarrior license is a mess and all I have to look forward to is Armored Core 6 or maybe 1 good indie mech game I have yet to find.

I'd also like to post a link to this site

They have a cool 3D printed adapter that converts the 72mm fan bracket to a 60mm one so you can install a Noctua 60mm into the XBOX as well as a 40mm adapter for 1.0 models with the fan on the GPU, which is definitely a thing I need. They also have cool vertical stands for consoles that aren't originally intended for it, like the PS1 and XBOX, they also have some specific obscure parts that may be a bit harder to come by.

They also sell things for the MiSTer if that's a thing any of you guys use for emulating 16bit games, I think a PS1/Dreamcast capable MiSTer is being worked on so that will be cool in the future.
