I love this song so much and just listened to it. I was going to mention it in some thread but instead I found your post on a search so I'll just post it here.

I'm often annoyed by how up its own ass prog can be but this is a masterpiece.

Proggish tune tax.
Used to use this as part of a morning workout routine, particularly on an uphill/downhill cycling part.

Oh and since this is hardly 50s/60s/70s other tax.

This isn't progressive, it's just insane.

I found that I got a lot of mileage beyond traditional "oldies" to get into stuff out of Jamaica and surrounding areas like first generation ska.

Never heard of the group before but that is definitely a solo "road dawg" song. Nice.

I don't know what it is about this song, but I'll take it.

It's one of the first psychedelic groups, founded by Roky Erickson. Erickson had some serious issues and after getting busted for pot, somehow copped a plea that got him sent to a mental institution, which permanently fucked his head. He still had a lengthy solo career that ranged from genius to unlistenable.

Technically '85 so somewhat outside the range:
 
One of the first rock bands to employ overtly Satanic themes into their music. It made for an interesting juxtaposition with the music itself, which was standard late sixties/early seventies. Apparently their live show theatrics scared the shit out of Timothy Leary as he was tripping one night in the Detroit nightclub where they were playing.

 
What about actual oldies channel things? For like people who shouldn't even be driving?

This may sound like 1945, but it was 1965. Roger Miller was no fan of hippies.
