The champion isn't obliged to give bums a shot at the title.

When Mihawk is riding around on his sailboat, people get real quiet about being The World's Strongest Swordsman.
You’re not wrong, but I just wish that he did more than just chill and be menacing. It doesn’t have to be much, just enough to show why he’s still the guy Zoro is looking to beat (especially since Oda has made it clear that Zoro will only take the greatest swordsman title by defeating Mihawk in direct combat with someone to witness it like a PPV title fight). Didn’t Buggy tell Mihawk to his face (alongside Crocodile) that he needed to actually do something and show why he has his title (and why Crocodile has his bounty as much as it is)?

the only reason i can think of that mihawk does not do anything is that there is some form of curse on his sword like with zoros that drains his life every time he uses it. leaving him in a situation where he is just waiting for someone worthwhile to come fight him and give him an honorable death. but even that is a little bit far fetched.

i just hope we actually do get a battle and not some nonsense like mihawk just going up to zoro and saying "oh you were already the strongest swordsman back when i trained you on my island" before getting killed by imu or whoever else.

Not sure if that’ll happen. Hawk Eye’s whole thing has been that he’s waiting for Zoro to hit his max potential and then look for him. And even the timeskip training only happened because Zoro got the order to wait longer before reuniting, along with Mihawk realizing that Zoro wanted to get stronger so he can help others instead of just trying to boost his reputation as somebody who shouldn’t be fucked with.

And as a result, you have people on Twitter who think that there’s only two SHs actually worth a damn at this point.

My interpretation was always that Mihawk is just bored, he's climbed every mountain and conquered every challenge and there's simply nothing left for him. He just wants to retire at this, which is why he's helping the Cross Guild since if Croc can create his own country he can have somewhere he can retire to without worrying about the WG or random pirates showing up to commit suicide by Mihawk challenge him. I think this is also why he trained Zoro, as it's his hope of someone who can defeat him and take the title and give him the ability to retire in peace.

He can also die a glorious and dignified death worthy of his field, there’s also that.

But hasn’t the manga more or less implied that with his actions? Any time he fights, it’s “arrive, wreck shit, leave” (which admittedly is pretty dope) and he was more or less happy to hear the warlord system was abolished because he can be chased after again. Hell, when he first fought Zoro, the whole thing was Zoro earning his begrudging respect (IIRC, the Netflix series really played up this angle).

Zoro was the first in ages to make him actually feel something. Mihawk is just another guy Oda is waiting to do a deep dive on in the endgame (or not long before that).

so is mihawk just another version of kaido? in that he is the strongest and is waiting for someone to give him an actual fight.
