Gear 5 isn't Luffy. Luffy took shit seriously. Luffy understood that people's lives were at stake, and acted appropriately.

*they marked me "dumb" but they never called me "wrong."
Luffy can look and behave like an idiot but he takes things seriously. When he started playing with Arlong's teeth, he was told to take things seriously, he replied that he did take things seriously. Silly does not indicate he is not being serious.

As has been said before, Luffy may come across as not having a lot occupying the space between his ears, but when he's locked in and ready to throw hands, that's when you hope you didn't piss him off. Also, Gear 5 is Luffy, except that his ultimate form does something different from other shonen forms by coming from something other than anger or the special breed of anger that is righteous fury.

And since you mentioned Arlong, at a certain point, he realized that the point wasn't to beat Arlong, but to destroy Nami's room, where she was forced to make maps for Arlong.

Exactly. Luffy being silly and Luffy not being serious are two different things. He is a natural comedic individual but he is serious.

Would argue that it is still Luffy
It's who Luffy is as a character outside of the battling he's a bubble head that can fight but yeah he still knows when to stop playing around. You do get moments during G5 where he stops fighting but ultimately G5 is luffy being able to fight at his absolutely peak while messing around. Considering that Oda also wanted to make this a contrast of what you typically see in shounen where the best form of a character is a serious fighting form Luffy's form allowed him to literally jump rope and deform the serious fighting form of Kaido making his eyes pop out and make wacky expressions.
And since you mentioned Arlong, at a certain point, he realized that the point wasn't to beat Arlong, but to destroy Nami's room, where she was forced to make maps for Arlong.
This is also what I meant by Luffy being Luffy in terms of his place with these powers. He will fulfill whatever the prophecy is not because of destiny but because he's just being Luffy.

gear 5 luffy is just luffy at his most free. that freedom is what makes him happy because he is able to do whatever he wants while also being strong enough to protect his friends. besides its honestly scarier if you are a guy like kaido who nobody can kill then all of a sudden you got this guy whos just bouncing around and laughing the whole time while swinging you around like a jump rope.

I also think Luffy fighting with joy is going to matter, the Giant's 3 world mythos makes it seems like there is a cycle going on here.

"Badguy rules the world, Badguy gets overthrown by someone who turns out to be not much better"

Imu is breaking the cycle using fear, Luffy will break it properly using joy.

You are wrong in addition to being dumb. Luffy was always willing to try strange and silly ideas in serious situations, lest we forget Gum-gum Balloon/Pinwheel/Flower Arrangement/Octopus/Idiot or Water Luffy or the fact Gear 3 is kind of stupid or Luffy breaking their infiltration into Wano. You’re just asshurt your impression of the series as to slowly get dragged into angry mid-2000’s edge was wrong.

Anyways, I really think you'll see all of the worst generation, sans Blackbeard, come back and play supporting roles in the final war.
Speaking of Blackbeard. I think he that will be actually the one who starts the final war as a dying gift.

The Harley text predicted that the "The inconvenient remnants recall the promised day and hear the voice of the half-moon," at which half-moon likely means "D".

If my interpretation of this is correct chances are Blackbeard would be defeated by Luffy and then he will throw himself to execution like Roger once did. But his dying words are stuff that are even more damning and blatant than Vegapunk's enough that a lot of people who hear him speak will instantly realize that something is amiss and rebel against the World Government.

I still think the closest that the show ever got to that was Gear 4.
It reminds me of the people who always speculated on transformations and it was always the most Dragon Ball Z level stuff that didn't fit one piece at all. Gear 4 was still kind of Luffy silliness but a little "serious" on the side and Snakeman is probably the most "serious" you can get with Luffy.

Edit: I always wouldn't even call Snakeman "serious" since it's Gear 4 just smaller and faster.

It is just him using Haki to harden his arms...letting him do the Attack from Random Directions that he did from Enel but with actual intent behind it.

Blackbeard is a real pirate's pirate. A pirate-themed pirate in a world where most pirates are now themed after circuses and animals. He's not the final boss but by God he should be.

I guess I was wrong when I said all those things in your post that I never actually said.

Let's play a game.

Q. What was the arc's villain's reaction to children walking over a cliff to their death?
A. Maniacal laughter.

Q. What was our hero's reaction to seeing children walk over a cliff to their death?
A. Maniacal laughter.

Watching a child get hurt or threatened is usually when Luffy stops fucking around, gets serious, and starts laying a beatdown on the bad guy. Here, Luffy just leans back and laughs.

Hating gear 5 has nothing to do with some edgy new form. I hate all the gears except gear 2. Hating gear 5 is about hating that they turned a heroic character and made him a sociopath who laughs when other people are hurt.

He probably would have been if Oda didn’t decide to introduce Imu or make a big deal of the machinations of the World Government.

I thought Luffy was laughing at how Loki had just turned into a massive dragon , which actually saved the kids.

luffy is a lot like goku in that they're both retards who are really good fighters. just because they are retarded does not mean they are not able to fight seriously. gear fifth is where his silliness rubs off onto everything around him. he actually thinks that picking up the ground will block a fire beam, and then it actually does. it's a very unconventional form because there is no rhyme or reason to his attacks past the thoughts that luffy puts into them.
